Interesting possible new transfer

Austin DeSanto was the wrestler who beat Lee in his senior state finals match (Yes, an asterisk is needed since Lee was wrestling on a torn ACL).

In a bit of irony, it looks like he may be joining the team. Drexel has granted his release, and he's looking at Iowa, PSU and Nebraska. He's had some issues (got in trouble for allegedly trying to intentionally hurt Micic), but given our needs at 133 and the fact that he was a true freshman and could very easily mature under Tom and Terry, I like the idea of giving him a chance.

As usual, though, we'd have to beat out Cael, but the opportunity to step right in to the lineup has to be better here.

It's now official. DeSanto has committed to the Hawks.

I know he's had some issues, but I LOVE this addition. He's talented and will fit right in at 133. Outstanding get for us.

sign him and get him in the room. i don't think anyone is really on par with Lee. but, is this kid the same quality wrestler as Lee? does he have the same motor?

He reminds me a lot of Darian Cruz and Ronnie Bresser. Very quick, "in and out" type of wrestler. Beating Lee, even with the torn ACL, is no small task. He's talented, just a bit immature. I'm ecstatic about adding him. 133 was a big hole.

i'm no wresting expert so i appreciate your take. we were just a couple of guys short of really contending. it seemed like it was PSU and OSU, then Iowa by itself and then everyone else. That seems like the 3 separate tiers.

I'm expecting OSU to take a fall over the next two seasons. It will still be in the top 5 hunt, but its peak was last season, IMO.

Not the case with PSU, though. That program is shaping up to be as dominant as Iowa was in the 70s, 80s and 90s, with no end in sight.

With Iowa's current roster, and with the addition of DeSantos, I fully expect us to solidly be in second place in 2019. PSU returns too much to expect a realistic shot at the title.

their wrestlers just look so much bigger than everyone else. what is it that they do that we don't?

Cael has done an amazing job of creating a great culture at PSU. That, combined with an extremely well-funded club and first rate recruiting is what it boils down to. Cael scours the country looking for talent, and he reels them in. It's a classic example of the rich getting richer. They are on a roll, and will be for some time.

Just like Pat Downey, the kid's a mentally unstable douche bag. I know you don't agree with me but he's one of the dirtiest wrestlers out there and he's going to do something to embarrass the program. On top of the whole temper control thing he's a sore loser. Not a good combo.

The Micic match you mentioned wasn't just the kimura. He shot a takedown after the whistle and ripped Micic's headgear off.

Put his hands on the ref several times out of frustration, and if you've seen any of his other matches he does it all the time, not just in this one. This year in the consolation when he got beat by Delvecchio he screamed at the refs about getting his head gear grabbed (which he didn't, must be okay for him to rip it off someone else though?) and afterwards he threw one ankle band off the mat and basically tossed the other one in the ref's face.

For more fun check out the Tucker match at the EIWAs. He's behind (pattern here?) and tries to yank Tuckers knee out even after he gets yelled at.

Drexel got rid of him for a reason, and I guarantee you they're laughing their asses off because they just sold us a lemon with no warranty. Kid's going to be sweeping floors with Jacob Park or in jail in a year or two.

Won't be rooting for him and I hope he never sees the mat in a Hawkeye singlet.

If you're ready to completely give up on a kid that's barely out of high school, then, yes, I do disagree with you.

That's not to say I don't share your concerns. I do, but, I'm trying to keep it in perspective. He's still a kid, albeit one with anger control and maturity issues.

Hopefully, Brands can help him mature and grow, but, if he continues to act inappropriately, I'll be the first one in line calling for his release. Until then, I'll be hoping he can mature and be an effective wrestler for us.

I’ll clarify my statement in that I’ll root for him to get his head straight, but I still would rather he wasn’t wearing a Tigerhawk after the disrespect I’ve seen him show refs. Micic has 10 times the character of DeSanto and it pisses me off to think that that pointless kimura could have blown his shoulder out and killed Micic’s career for no other reason other than a toddler losing his temper.

There’s a sanctity there that DeSantos obviously doesn’t respect. I’m sorry if I came off too hardcore but I just can’t make myself think this was a good pick up.
