Interesting point made by Jon D Miller during Soundoff...

Under no circumstances should this team have lost at Minnesota, rebuilding or not. Should have 8 wins right now going for 9 next week.

And oh by the way mediocre programs don't win the Orange Bowl

Kansas Jayhawks.

January 3rd, 2008.

Defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies in the 2008 Orange Bowl.

You could argue that not only is Kansas a mediocre football program, it's a below average program.

You lose hoffahawk. You lose real bad.

Read an interesting thing online, the UofI football program is worth TOP 15 MONEY WISE in collegiate football.

KF is paid top 5.

My problem is return on investment, technically speaking, we should be right there with the top 10 collegiate programs in the COUNTRY.

Yet, most years, we are not. We are mediocre...... HORRIBLE RETURN ON INVESTMENT!

Yes, this program makes money, but that is because us fans are morons more than anything.

Return on investment = pathetic!
We're in the top 15 in winning percentage since 2000.

Rip me if you want, I'm not saying it's ok to settle for mediocre season at all. But this year is kinda what I expected, as well as what I read from others prior to the start of the season.

Exactly. It's a gut wrenching year because we all want this team to pull the miracle, we have a little hope one week, and then they lose. Rebuilding, we expected it, and hoped things would be better than they are.

Return on Investment? You have invested exactly nothing worth mentioning, so cut your losses and GTFO of here. You and your nonexistent investment will not be missed. I promise you that. KF will be the coach until he decides to leave, and there is not a damn thing you can do about it. Sorry bro, but the only morons here are you and the rest of the wing-nuts who would run Kirk out of town. You guys are just pathetic. Again, your fandom will not be missed. So please, just STFU.

I was just about to post this. Add Louisville to that tally, too.

I think it has more to do with the types of losses. Not being able to convert on O and get stops on D at crucial times.

Fans get the here we go again syndrome.

I keep saying that last year was not a huge missed opportunity based on coaching or performance as much as injury.

DC, RG, RB, LB. These are positions that not only required replacements, but where the replacement was not up to B1G basic standards.

Good teams year in, year out in conference play beat those teams they should (Minnesota, Indiana, Purdue this year). This staff has a terrible record against lower division teams in the B1G. Playing .500 career ball against these teams is terrible. THAT is what drives most Iowa fans bonkers is this staff's ability to lose to the poorer teams on a regular basis WHEN Iowa has more talent, in some cases much more talent.

Yet they can beat Michigan, Penn St and other top teams year in year out in the B1G.

If this staff consistently beat the poorer teams, Iowa would be a very good team and this would truly be a great staff. I think the fans can see the potential of this staff but they refuse or ignore their potential because they are set in their conservative ways. And fans know that this staff is not going to change and probably will continue to lose to the Minnesota's and Indiana's in the B1G. They would rather play the poor little Iowa has no sizzle routine than take the bull by the horns and be a truly great staff.

We are blitizing more this year but ONLY because the front four are incapable of a decent pass rush. And many of the blitzes have worked very well. Sometimes you get burned but is there a difference between getting burned and letting a QB get very comfortable in the pocket and repeatedly converting long third downs and sometimes long 4th downs?

I think a win Saturday against nebby and all will be Ok with Iowa fans. I actually thought 8 wins would be the best we would do this year and obviously we still have a shot at that.

I called 9 wins, which is where the Hawks should end up after the bowl win.

However, if the 3 on, 3 off pattern continues, Iowa loses the last 2.

Break that cycle!

What is defined as a good team and a great team? Someone made a comment that Okie St. lost to the clowns. That they had no business loosing to them. Hawkeye fans say the same. We should have taken care of business instead of facing overtime play with them. The same goes with Minn. Iowa had no business loosing that game.

Both the Clowns and Gophers decided that if Iowa was going to let them hang in there to the end they my as well get the hint and go get it.

Good teams have good players, good coaching, good schemes, good all around play. Sure they have moments where they can't capitalize on certain areas of the game, but most of the time they figure how to avoid those situations to prevent being in those moments.

Great teams have every thing above but they are always consistent with making other teams seem like they have no business being on the field with them. Even if they are the 10th or even 5th ranked team below them. They play to perfection and don't accept any thing less. In other wards the coaching staff makes sure that they don't play to the level of those lesser competition.

Okie state is a real good team. I would guess that best out 5 against ISU, taking care of business, they win 4. That 1 was Friday.
ISU was given the game. They heard the voice "come and get it, we are going to let you back in". They got the W!

A great Okie team would have gone the distant with the pedal to the medal. No looking back.

Iowa has good players, good coaching, but lack good and consistent play calling and schemes. In result, they can't figure out how to take care of business. Especially towards those two teams.
I am sure that they could have beaten them. Could have, should have talk. They didn't.

That's why we as Hawkeye fans get upset. Iowa is not a bad team. KF is not a bad coach. Iowa had no excuses last year. This year the good players are still trying to figure out how to become great. How to let the game come to them instead of trying to figure out how not to loose the game.

7 wins right now is hard to swallow, because we feel they should have 9 wins to this point.

One last point. This year is proven that any given Sat or what ever day any team can beat anyone. The great teams are the ones that prevent that from happening. LSU might be the only great team this year. Minus the Bama game. Houston feels the same.
If you don't take care of business you don't deserve the greatness!

Feel free to add to my post or disagree to agree.

If the minny game was a win instead of a loss i think 90% of Iowa fans would be ok with the season to date.

The OP has my statement mostly correct, but I also added the quoted text here. The Minnesota loss is a turd in a punch bowl this year

This 100%.

It's the type of losses like Minny that so many have pointed out.

It's not making the play at crucial times repeatedly like CAARHAWK said. KF would call that execution on the players, but NMHawk's last point above puts that fully on the shoulders of 'execution' on the coaches. Since the Hawks are not talented enough to play effectively the coaches' desired style, the coaches need to change their style in certain circumstances.

It's the hangover effect from last season that others still harbor bad feelings about.

Unlike so many threads, this one has been interesting to read through. Nice job.

Ferentz averages a little over 7 wins a year since he has been at Iowa. Looks to me like we are right where we are suppose to be.
