Interesting point made by Jon D Miller during Soundoff...

Jon- you made a very interesting point tonight during sound off. Listening to bits and pieces of the show tonight was interesting. Many of the callers sounded almost like Iowa had lost the game. Your point that I found fascinating dealing with one of the callers was (feel free to correct if I got it wrong): Are fans' opinion of the current 7-4 team more harsh because of the disappointing 8-5 season last year? If Iowa had gone 11-1, played in a BCS bowl again, and then all of that talent moved on, we all would have clearly understood this would be a bit of a rebuilding year. But, a very talent laden team didn't live up to preseason expectations, which makes fans feel like last year was the rebuilding year and this year we should be back in the saddle. I had expected 8 wins this year and am still hopeful we get to that number before the bowl game. Could it be some had misplaced expectations based upon last year?

People are (rightly) concerned that we're seeing a trend. Two consecutive 7-8 win seasons is worse than an 11-win season and a 7-win one.

I don't think it's any great insight, but is still worth saying--fans are still ****** about last year still and they should be!! Jon points this out often and he is correct. Last year was a giant missed opportunity that gives fans reason to question what is going on with this staff.

Read an interesting thing online, the UofI football program is worth TOP 15 MONEY WISE in collegiate football.

KF is paid top 5.

My problem is return on investment, technically speaking, we should be right there with the top 10 collegiate programs in the COUNTRY.

Yet, most years, we are not. We are mediocre...... HORRIBLE RETURN ON INVESTMENT!

Yes, this program makes money, but that is because us fans are morons more than anything.

Return on investment = pathetic!

As Jon pointed out a couple weeks ago, last season was an underachieving disappointment, this season was going to be a down year after having so many starters moving on.

If the minny game was a win instead of a loss i think 90% of Iowa fans would be ok with the season to date.

I'm in the 90% - we should be in the hunt one way or another for the division championship the last week every single year. With that win at Minny we would be playing for something next week (albeit we would of still needed help by NW to beat MSU, but relevant nonetheless).

I know most including you don't want hear this but return on investment is more than W/L's. Mediocre is 7-5, 6-6, 5-7. That isn't where we are. Look the Minny lose was a horrible one and last season didn't live up to expectations but this years team was never going to be 10-2.

And oh by the way mediocre programs don't win the Orange Bowl, I would guess all but about 15 teams would love to have our football program results over the last decade just to bad some Iowa fans don't feel the same way.

By no means is this team or program perfect but it isn't nearly as bad as some make it out to be.

Fans are upset because the trend is down. And they blew it last year. Nobody expected Iowa to win the B1G this year.

Iowa lost to ISU and Minny. Neither should have been lost. Fans are upset to see the coaches (many grown men who spend all of their time working on football) continue to get out-taught and out-coached in special teams. Fans are upset to see KF give up on chances to win games. They're also upset that the coaches failed to go after juco DL's last year when it was painfully clear the closet was going to be bare.

There are no excuses for the preceding paragraph and no good arguments to defend these things.

As stated above, if the team beats ISU and Minny, or just Minny, then fans really have little to complain about. Losing to both leaves a bitter taste in people's mouths, especially when the head coach makes almost 4 million bananas per year. Meanwhile, the guy comes off as kind of smug, like he's too good to answer certain questions or shouldn't have to. The dude makes millions while a large number of Iowans are trying to figure out how to put some scratch together for their kids' Christmas presents. It may not be fair, but then again, phukk, how hard is it to put a genuine smile on your face, take ownership and be positive?

The irony in this post is amazing.

So I'm a moron for wanting to show support for my school? GTFO

I believe he's saying that the fans are going to follow the football team regardless of who is coaching. Its a valid point as there is no other team to cheer for in the state of Iowa. There are no pro sports team to compete for your dollar, you're not going to cheer for ISU, UNI or Drake. We're a pretty captive audience.

If the return on investment was only based only on W-L, you may have a point as Kirk's B10 record over his career is only about 10 games above .500

However as you pointed out the program is making a ton of money. And in college football, how much money the program makes far outweighs W-Ls and its not even close.

The loss to ISU was tough as well as Minnesota, but our young less athletic team had a great comeback against Pitt that we should have lost as well as that defensive stand against michigan. Lot of ups and downs this year, perhaps we don't agree with the coaches calls but we don't get paid to make them.
It's not like they read coaching 101 book and got hired. Keep in mind what was mentioned before about our record last 10 yrs plus our first official BCS bowl win in Orange bowl in school history. It is hard to watch at times but I think we do alright with personnel we have this year.

Rip me if you want, I'm not saying it's ok to settle for mediocre season at all. But this year is kinda what I expected, as well as what I read from others prior to the start of the season.

I am more ****** about last year than I am this year. Last year the team played well below expectations, look at all the NFL players that were on the team. The Wisconsin loss I pin on the coaches, overall the worst year KF has ever had.

But lets face it, this year the knowledgeable fans knew it was going to be a struggle. This is the worst defense I have seen since KF's second year. Yeah the Minnesota loss was tough to swallow but the Pitt win was amazing along with Michigan. So here we sit 7-4 going into Nebraska, if Iowa does not win another game this year I'll take 7 wins in a down year.
