INSTANT REAX PODCAST: Iowa Dominates ILL ST

Ott stole the show, but Jalil Johnson was incredibly disruptive inside. Looked very good. Mabin deserves a shout-out as well...he got a very tacky PI call against him but played great otherwise. D looked like the good Iowa D's of past.

Offense actually looks serviceable. Lot of talent in the backfield. Interior line looks really solid. Tackles were good enough. Receivers are a question-mark, agreed.

Special teams were a + rather than a -. All in all, great first game.

Did anyone else notice Wadley's moves at the end of the game? What's it take to get that guy some playtime?

He coughs it up. Coaches don't like that. Wadley won't get many carries this season.
Yep.

Wadley has nice moves, but his fumbling is a huge problem.

Daniels looked good and Canzeri complemented him nicely. At this point, Wadley is a garbage time RB only.

Come on guys, obvious sarcasm. I will say though. Last year I was hopeful his fumbles were bad luck. But when you spend all off season knowing you have fumble issues, then fumble on like your 3rd carry, there is a serious problem.

I was surprised to see Wadley and Joly but not Mitchell. Maybe he was hurt? He is supposedly third string.

Wadley has great moves, but fumbling once per 10 carries won't get him playing time.

Someone posted on the game thread that Scheel and Mitchell were nursing injuries and wouldn't play.

I felt hopeful after the Michigan game against Utah and was rewarded. Good job Hawkeyes! It was great to see them not struggle much. Pretty good execution for the first game of the season. On to clownville!

To make matters worse, this has got to be just as much a mental thing for him as a physical thing at this point. He had issues last year and was even asked about it during media day. And when an RB is worrying about fumbling they don't run the way they naturally do.

Its really too bad, he's got talent. Ahman Green turned to the lower arm sleeves to solve his problem. Adrian Peterson just got better at holding the ball. Obviously Wadley is not in their universe but just goes to show its a problem that can be dealt with. Hopefully Wadley can figure out a way to hang on to the ball. Too much ability to be sitting on the sideline.

I was impressed with the clock management at the end of the first half to set up a score. Years past would have been a half back dive followed by a kneel.

Lots of stuff improved on....going for it on 4th, fake field goal, end of half clock management, offensive execution in first game. This was as crisp, clean, and good as we've looked out of the gates in a long time!

LOL! We had similar discussions in our section.

You know I'm a defender of the Kirfer, but even after that fake FG I turned to my daughter and (jokingly/in all seriousness) informed her the she had just witnessed a historically rare event.
