Insight Payout question

How does a bowl that is supposedly fifth in the pecking order for the Big 10 have a higher payout than all but the top two? The Insight bowl pays more than the outback and the gator - but gets a lower billing? I am just curious as to how that happens? Does the Insight simply have poor negotiating or are they trying to position themselves to be a bigger game in the future?

You get lower billing because you are on the west coast, holding your game late at night on a week-night...

agreed, but if that is the case, how can they afford a higher payout? I wonder if their TV contract pays them more because they basically have no competition on TV footballwise, vs a new years day game when there are three other games one?

Insight went from $1.3 to $3.25 million this year and rotates the 4/5 slot in Big Ten. Insight is the 3rd highest payout bowl outside the BCS bowls. People just view it as a weaker bowl because it isn't in January. January bowls are watered down. I'm more concerned with how much $$$ the game pays out.

Here's why January Bowls are overrated: Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl (January 9 in San Fransico), BBVA Compass Bowl (January 8 in Birmingham, AL), GoDaddy.com Bowl (January 6 in Mobile, AL). Those that believe these are more "elite" because they are January bowls please explain.

It's basically the new Alamo bowl.
