Injuries and Bowl

Do we have any idea if either of the true RG's will be back by the bowl game? How about any of the backers? For that matter, do we even know what is wrong with these players?

How about ARob? If he had academic indigestion after one concussion, is it a full-grown ulcer after 2?

Would be nice to know these answers before spending money on a bowl trip.

Both will be avilable. Also Tarp will be back full speed. Speculation is Neilsen may be back- his status should be updated next week. I think he has been out 6 weeks and originally he was out 8-12 weeks I think.

Prater and Hyde will also be back full speed. Although Prater will take 3-4 weeks to heal I believe. I think he had high ankle sprain but do not think offical comments have stated yet.

Gettis high ankle sprain, and McMillain is neck injury. McM has been out and only played the 3rd quarter against Northwestern and got re-injured.

Koeppel was 4th string and only played because no one else was left. Huntermark left the tema after Mcillain passed him on depth chart in camp.

I don't trust that that Cody really had a real spot on the depth chart. KF's preseason charts are often not very closely related to what actually happens in the season.

That being said, I think the fact that guys like Orne, Boffelli, and NmVan Slotten were not better options than Koepple is a concern.

Van S is a tackle and not strong enough yet, Boefelli has had several minor injuries that interfered with him practicing is my understanding- he also is a center / guard emergency player.

Anyone should be able to slide from tackle to guard. We had three tackles do it just last year. So, I put more stock into Van Slott just not being strong enough. But seriously, not stronger than a 260 reserve center who got consistently driven into the backfield by mediocre DT's? How long will it take any of them to develop that strength?

Also, your description of Boffeli as a reserve/emergency center/guard concerns me, because these guys are supposedly the future. Perhaps we see now why Iowa is going so strong after O Line recruiting this year. Just hope some of these guys can develop in the off-season, because Iowa looks dangerously thin on the O Line next year if they don't.

Guards are asked to pull alot and go after 2nd level much more than Tackles. Also alot more to the pass blocking as you must insure the right person takes the correct rushed. Tackle is much more clear cut. Remember up to the end of camp Koepell was 4th string then a player left the team and 2 injures. You can't plan on going 6 deep at guard normally.

Koeppel playing and getting the nod over the younger (Connor B, Van Sloten, etc) probably has more to do with him being a senior and having a little more experience.

A healthy Gettis would be nice to have for the bowl game. Nothing against Josh but Adam is hands down a better fit at guard.

As I said, I put no stock in Cody being listed on the pre-season depth chart. Kanellis was, Anton was, and the list goes on and on. So saying Koepple was fourth string is more than a stretch.

That being said, it doesn't make much difference with respect to my point. Look at it this way, Gettis and Mac will need to each start next year. Koepple will be gone. If you are saying that none of the other guys are even relatively ready, how can we expect them to be ready next year if there is an injury?

It is hard to go from not ready to play, even when the starter is getting killed to being a strong replacement in one off-season. That is what I mean by dangerously thin.
