Individual match ups - Iowa at Wisconsin

Interesting matchups.

Gesell will have his hands full with Koenig, a strong 6'3", 195 pound PG. Koenig has deceptive quickness, and is a dead-eye from 3-range. Gesell needs to wear him down a little if he can.

Jok and Gasser. Gasser is on the move all the time, and is a good drive-dish guy. Can Jok stay with him? Gasser will be grabbing Jok's jersey a lot, and will try to get flops when Peter drives to the hoop. Peter needs to stay cool. Gasser can work on a young player's head.

Dekker vs. Uthoff. Love this match up. Uthoff will not be getting mismatches too much in this game, as he has in the past two games. The Hawks need to set solid screens for him, but Wisky is adept with footwork in fighting through screens and Dekker is quicker than Uthoff.

White vs. Hayes. I love this one too. Dead heat. Hayes will try to get Aaron in foul trouble, but Aaron will do the same to Hayes. Both could get quick fouls. Hayes has a better outside shot than White. But White is more active in the open court.

Woodbury vs. Kaminski. Will be physical. Kaminsky will push Woodbury on the block. Can Adam hold his ground? Sometimes.

Bench match ups: Wisconsin really isn't that deep with the loss of Jackson. Iowa has an edge. Iowa may try to run a lot and draw fouls, but with the Bo Ryan effect and the ability of Wisonsin to avoid fouls, Iowa may not get to the FT line as much as they like.

Wisconsin probably has the edge in every matchup of the starters. I think the Badgers will win it, but I just hope Iowa makes it an interesting and close battle all the way.

I'm really looking forward to this game. Like already mentioned, both teams match up pretty well with each other.

Woodbury seems to always have a good game against a highly rated center. Hopefully, the pattern will continue against Wisconsin.

I'm thinking the matchups between physical ability and talent are less important than who Hawks can keep on the floor. Between starters, Wisky has slight edge but, since it's going to be a grinder, this tends to boil down to how stays out of foul trouble and who gets to the line. Huge advantage Wisky to get the ref bias; decent advantage to Hawks if can get some calls.

Wisky might not be that deep but I really fear how mercilessly they will abuse that silly lineup of Clemmons, Oglesclank, Uthoff / Jok / Uhl, Gabe. It's bad enough that Fran still thinks it's viable and will throw it out there voluntarily sometime around the 15 - 12 minute mark. It'll be an embarrassment if he's forced to do it much longer than 3-4 minutes because of foul trouble.

I'm not too worried about Kaminski on the block against Woody. I'm more worried about him stretching the floor. If Iowa plays man to man he'll make Woody come out to guard him. Which is why I doubt Iowa will play man to man much. Woodbury's feet are just too slow to guard someone on the perimeter without getting beat off the dribble. Niang tore Iowa up by stretching the floor and knocking down shots. Kaminski is capable of doing the same.

Iowa in that zone defense is nothing to write home about. They give up a lot of open three's.

The 3's will be raining in Madison.....cannot leave anyone on that team alone from behind the arc.....need to be physical, rebound well, and most of all, keep your damn composure....on the road and gettin cocky is not where we wanna be unless we're ahead and 00:00 on the clock....;).....Tough enough to win on the road, but even more so in Madison....we've done it before, and look for Wisconsin to get behind, and start floppin around to get calls and change the "mo" in their favor....

Wisconsin does a lot of switching. Jok in the post against Gasser and Uthoff in the post any time a guard has switched into guarding him. That is where we can get Connie into some foul trouble but we MUST find someone who can make an entry pass into the post. If the refs call Gasser for holding on 5 of the 40 times he's committing that foul, Jok will score a lot of points.

Wisconsin has no bench, if we can get a couple guys in foul trouble early, I really like our chances.

Funny, I ALWAYS see us as being able to "handle" Wisconsin, and yet...

It isn't even one of those football-type things where we turn a very average QB into Heisman material. Wiscy just seems to come through against us when needed.

If this shallow bench thing can be exploited, that would be nice.

That worries me because i think Jok will struggle to keep up with Gasser. If Jok simply expended all of his energy on the defensive end, I would consider that a win at his position. Keep Gasser from getting hot and killing us feom behind the arc.

How long is Jackson out? Will it make much difference for us? I have seen almost nothing of Wiscy this year.

Wisconsin is a top 3 team in my opinion. A bunch of tourney-tested veterans who play well on both ends of the court. They don't foul much, they don't turn the ball over. They wear down teams by working their offense for 25 seconds on several possessions, and then they usually get a good look or get the opponent to foul. Seems like a lot of their guys come through big in clutch situations - like they did last year vs. Iowa.

Very tough game. Could be a Wisky blowout, but sure hoping Iowa competes for 40 minutes.

I rarely see Kaminsky's name now, at least compared to pre-season/early-season. I take it Jackson being out won't mean as much as it would for us being without White or Uthoff?

True but Wisconsin doesn't have great penetrating guards either. Thats what kills Iowas zone is when super quick guys penetrate it and kick, and then we have our guys flying out at the shooters and taking themselves totally out of the play.

Koening is pretty good but not super quick like Minnesota or OSUs guards.

Zone may be a viable option for portions of the game.

Oh buddy, there will be flops. Count on it.

I think Jackson is their second most important player. He's the one who's clutch and always makes some ridiculous shot at the end. Him being out is a big deal in my opinion.
