They've done this kind of thing in Indy for years. It used to be called the Wooden Classic, and always included Purdue. I think this was called the Hoosier Classic, or something like that. They've tried a lot of intrastate options year to year, getting IUPUI involved, the pre-season NIT, Ball State has been in the mix, but I think they really have something with IU and Purdue each hosting a game, back to back. This was the first time they have done that. Downtown Indianapolis was bedlam this afternoon, and it was a fantastic atmosphere all day. Everyone seemed to get along as well.
I think something like this would be great in Des Moines, but it would be different, because there are many other D1 programs to choose from in Indiana. In Iowa, it would simply round robin between the 4 schools year to year. Might get stale, but who knows? It may work.
