Incredible Stat Regarding Iowa's Red Zone Defense

This is from the B1G ESPN Blog:

  • We knew the Hawkeyes' defense was good -- they're No. 9 nationally in total defense -- but their red-zone defense has been just ridiculous. Opponents are scoring touchdowns on just 11.1 percent of their red zone trips, the best margin in the nation. By far. Oregon is second at 33.3 percent. Iowa's percentage is the best for an FBS team through six games in ... let's see here ... the last 10 years.

Nice stat, but relatively meaningless. The only stat that matters is that we are 4-2, with losses to the only decent teams we have played.

Ok then. Every thread on this board should be discussing Iowa's 4-2 record and nothing else. Right?

Probably not..but in the end, all that matters is the won-lost record. Again, the stat will be much more important if we keep it going against the good competition coming up.

The stat is just a fluke and hardly impressive at all. Think about this, in 6 games, Iowa has only had one "goal-to-go" series on defense. In other words, between Iowa's 6 opponents, there has only been one time TOTAL for the season that the other team has a had a first down at the 10 yard line or closer with 3 or 4 cracks at the EZ. And why is this? Because they've been able to score on big plays from much farther out, negating the importance of redzone possessions. Proof of this is the fact that Iowa has already LOST 2 GAMES even with this "incredible" and "amazing" statistic. And the whole "everyone plays crappy teams" early thing is just plain crap. Sagarin has Iowa with the 72nd hardest strength of schedule at this point, which means that 71 teams in America have played a tougher schedule than Iowa. Wisconsin, for example, has already played Arizona State and Ohio State, both in the top 10 of scoring offense. NIU is the best scoring offense that we have played, and we gave up 30 freaking points.

Here's a nice stat that may enjoy.. It comes from Jonny Websites write up preview of the game this wkend. If you really think Iowa just gives up the big play, and that's all... Give the preview a read.

"Iowa is 3rd in the league in fewest passing plays allowed of 10 yards or more while OSU is 8th and the Hawkeyes are 4th in fewest passing plays allowed of 20 yards or more (16) while OSU is third in that category (15); Michigan State is #1."

I've linked it, just in case you'd like to read some more...

All of these insane stats are going to change saturday.

or,

they'll give up big passing plays so red zone won't matter.

I will remind you that as the season progresses, nearly all of the teams around the country will be playing in-conference competition, half of which will be on the road, and will have tougher schedules. In other words, although Iowa's stats are not against top level competition, neither are the stats of most other teams. So, as the stats cover a larger number of games, and as competition for most teams getter tougher, the chances that Iowa will remain in the hunt for solid stat rankings are pretty good. Make sense?

Now this is the type of thinking we need on the Iowa staff. An in-depth analysis uncovers a way of thinking that I doubt many have thought before in regards to this here topic. Excellent work. This kind of thinking makes Iowa's statistics actually pretty impressive.

Thing is big plays. Many on here have said it. I counter by helping the secondary with tips. At this point, thats all i got, because our secondary sucks. I hate to pile more onto the front 7, but they seem to be the ones who have improved the most. Coaching players, what ev. I call it the way it is. Ask those boys out back if they need their hand held while they take a **** also.

Real question for ALL is do you believe that Iowa Defense is really that good? If you say yes, I want what your smoking.. :)

So how has Iowa lost 2 games already while playing one of the easiest schedules in the country? I'll hang up and listen.

I remember seeing a stat (i believe) before MSU that said Iowa had played the 2nd or 3rd toughest schedule of all B1G members.
Ahead of Wisky OSU and MSU.
As for the 2 losses... I think we know why. And it doesn't have much to do with the defense.

Thanks for calling.

I don't think it matters what any of us believe OR what anyone of us may be smoking. The fact that it is the best amongst all teams (by far-Oregon is 2nd @ 33%); and the best percentage in 10 years.

To deny that it is impressive, regardless of what you may think, would be just sillllllllllllllllly.

Defense will not be and hasn't been the reason Iowa has lost in a long time. KF is allergic to offense.

That's awesome! Just shows you how mediocre or poor the other 2 phases of the game are....and our coaches on game day are a tremendous liability.

I remember reading a stat 10 seconds ago showing that we are 6th in the B1G, and barely ahead of MSU for the 7th spot. Thanks for playing, genius.

Defense was CLEARLY an issue in both losses. Serious question: do you even watch the games?
