Incredible coaching

The coaches knew that a high scoring game would result in a "L"...brilliant play...cully was superb. Those who criticize Cully have not played the game and don't understand the game. Not another tougher Freshman PG in college.

So the people who have critisized Cully have doubted his toughness?

What Cully needs is another quality ball handler to relieve some of the pressure he has to face on a continual basis. It's obvious that he isn't the type of point guard who can break down opponents and beat people on a consistent basis off the dribble. I think with another ball handler on the court(preferrably at the same time), you would see a lot more productivity and a lot less turnovers from Cully.

It's hard not to smile while watching him play. He gets pounded and pressured night after night and keeps coming back for more.

Really? You knew that a high scoring game would result in a W, wow.

Its one thing to try and pat yourself on the back Lick but do you really need to come on here after a win and say that you knew your goal was to score just enough points to win? Brilliant.

Hey prickapotomos...the team knew exactly what the gameplan was and executed it...well coached game by Lick and staff...keep ********, if that's all you know.

Burky, you'd better be careful. You're making far too much sense and sounding far too reasonable in your posts. I'm not sure you're going to fit in here. ;-)

Please let me stay. I'm sure if I put my mind to it, I can be as obnoxious and ill informed as the next poster. :)

So our game plan was to score more points than the opponent? Check. That's an amazing game plan, I wish we would incorporate it more often.

I'm with the OP. Indiana is an uptempo team that likes to run. They aren't a very good shooting team, so limited possession really hurts their scoring chances. Iowa held them to under 50 points because they limited Indiana's possessions.

Good coaching, for sure.

Apparently 12345 did not watch the game??? The announcers said several times during the game that Lick told them in an interview before the game that he wanted to take longer posessions to keep the ball away from IU, a team that is more athletic than Iowa and can get out and run.

It seems pretty standard as far a Iowa offensive sets go, although it seems to be getting a little better and Iowa will push the ball at times!

The only small problem is that we almost always try to work the clock. Tonight wasn't any different in that regard. The biggest difference was the rebounding and the fewer attempts from 3-point land, both positives in my view.

I thought we limited their possessions more due to our rebounding than anything else. I didn't think we worked the clock any more or less than in other games this season.

Pretty sure I saw him beat Khalin Lucas off the dribble the other night. He seemed to have no trouble beating Doc Rivers' kid all night and getting all the way to the rim. Not sure what games you are watching?

Not sure what player you have been watching if you haven't noticed Payne doesn't beat people off the dribble on a "consistent basis". Even Lick can do it now again against an overly aggressive defense. Especially off of ball reversals.

I can't believe I'm even having to explain this. It should be so obvious to see. If you had really been watching, you'd have noticed River's kid forcing Payne into quite a few pressure turnovers. This was due to Payne not being able to break him down on a consistent basis. This is where another ball handler would be beneficial for him.

Cully Payne=John Wall...

I think it might have been a case of Iowa just out hustling and out rebounding Indiana more than anything. When you get as many shots in the paint as Iowa did, the percentage for scoring goes up compared to shooting 3's. But we did limit possessions like we always do. We will never play an uptempo game, we just have to get used to playing a slow style of ball.

You could also tell Indiana missed their best player. Many Big 10 teams have some key injuries, which will help Iowa. And I also believe they were missing another player due to a broken bone. Those were experienced players.

And for those of you, I wouldn't consider Tucker a key injury for Iowa. He has never played in the Big 10 and plays terrible defense. Iowa seems to play much better without him. At this point it seems he would bring another body to the table and that is about it. In the short time he played, he led the team in shooting 3's, which says something about him. On the other hand, perhaps he would have started to play stellar defense and stopped shooting all the time...who knows?

You could also say we were missing Archie...but he has not played a minute for Iowa this year so we don't know what that effect is other than another body.

Beside Wichita State and UNI, this game vs. Indiana had the slowest tempo so far this year for Iowa's games. The first two resulted in losses.

Cully is tough yes, but his play last night was not "superb". In fact overall it was probably his worst game of the year. Let's take a look at his stat line...

2 of 10 from the field
4 of 8 from the line
5 turnovers
3 assists

He made a couple of nice drives, and a couple of decent entry passes, and that's about it.

We won that game because we beat the hell out of Indiana down low, on the boards and offensively in the paint. I still like Cully but he did NOT have a standout game.

I love this whole, "give credit to Lick, he's the greatest" crowd.

Do you really believe that we played slow down basketball any more last night than we have in the preceding 2 years? Come on, there is a shot clock, we use the shot clock as an enemy to our offense. We take as much time off the clock on EVERY possession, in EVERY game. Last night was no exception.

We out rebounded Indiana by 13. They shot 35% and only had 3 assists. That is why we won.

I'm sure that Lick had a part in the win but to come on the message boards proclaiming that we are back and none of the doubters knew what we were talking about is absurd. It's one game.

I will agree it is absurd to proclaim all is well. It is about equally absurd to try to claim there is no progress being made with this team. Or that somehow the Iowa D didn't have anything to do with the numbers that Indiana posted. I do remember a TERRIBLE Indiana team beating us at Assembly Hall last year, and we probably had better talent than they did last year on the court.

It is a good win to beat an Indiana team that has more talent than you do at Assembly hall by 15, and if you can't see that, then you are absurd as well.

Trying to improve on the worst stretch of basketball in Iowa basketball history isn't exactly a major milestone. You do understand that we have been setting the bench mark for futility over the past 3 years right?

Winning one game against a **** poor IU team doesn't mean squat. Did we play better? Sure we did, but we sucked before....you get that right? We sucked. Its nearly impossible to determine if this team is any better today by basing it on wins against very, VERY bad competition and a loss to MSU (who won by 1 point to Minny).

We are still in 2nd to last place in conference. We play fOSU on Weds and that game will be an indication of where we stand in conference. Until that time, this is my last post on the basketball forum.
