In-state football recruiting miss that has hurt the most

French had a pretty modest career:

Considering what Iowa does with its lower-rated recruits, I have to think he would have been an NFL guy under the tutelage of either Jim Reid or Reese Morgan.

Depends on how you look at it. Are you talking about the highest RATED player we missed on, or are you talking abou the BEST player we missed on?

If we are talking BEST player we missed on, I would say David Johnson. While he was killing it for 4 years at UNI from '11-'14, we had Weisman as our best RB. If we had Johnson, Weisman could have stayed at FB, and Johnson would have over 1500 yards from scrimmage a year in '12, '13, & '14

FWIW....I just saw that Oliver Martin will have the same number as Shea Patterson. I wonder which one sees the field. :rolleyes:

The intent of my question was "best" (with the advantage of hindsight).

I half forgot about that guy.. Coming out of HS wasn't it a coin flip on him playing TE or DE? 6'5 6'6 long athletic guys will always have a place on a football field. I think Frost was out there at the time he was. I don't think he coached him but maybe he helped recruit him?

For those that have mentioned Ross P I can kinda see that but as far as impact would have been I just can't see him being more impactful than what Johnson would have been. Johnson could have put up monster numbers at a time we already had a pretty good Oline and we NEEDED A RB!!

Yep. We have had good linemen, but what we didn’t have in that 3 year stretch was a top end RB. I love all Hawkeyes, and Weisman did better than can reasonable be expected out of a guy who was more FB than RB. If Weisman could get 1000 or nearly 1000 yards behind those lines, it isn’t a stretch to think that an elite RB like Johnson would have had 1500 yards behind the same lines.

No doubt and since their wouldn't have been any time sharing of carries he'd have gotten as much as he could have handled. It's not even remotely knocking Weisman to say what you did either I agree. He had some huge holes to run through I remember where runs he got 20-30 yards on. A guy like Johnson may have taken those same touches to the house.

Coaches at the the time probably thought we were set at running back. Markus Coker, Greg Garmin, Mikail McCall, DeAndre Johnson. None of them came close to seeing the finish line at Iowa. Canzeri did but he was banged up every year he was here.

Think they would have loved to have D. Johnson on scholly around the beginning of 2013 or so? Proof that you can never have enough running backs in the stable.

I don't think that was why David Johnson wasn't offered a full ride. They did offer him a grey shirt. I think it was just misevaluating him. They didn't think he was either academically all ready to go or there was something about his game they weren't totally sold on or a combination of both. Big miss all the way around.
 
Not sure how heavily recruited he was by Iowa, and wasn't a fan growing up but what about Kyle Orton. He had a very good college career and played some meaningful NFL snaps
