In 45 years Joe Pa has only won 2 national titles...

... I read that the other day. Now granted I think he's had at least 2 other season in which we went undefeated and didn't win a NC... but he's had only 2 titles in 45 years and he's a fricken legend. Some think KF will never take us to "the next level" because he hasn't won a title in 12 years here. To be fair maybe we should wait another 12 years before we rush to any judgments.

Whats this 'we' you speak of?

I thought now that you have a 'smart' phone you were above such prole-like mistakes??

Maybe if Joepa wasn't such a prole and got himself a smart phone he'd be doing far better. I hope the people in Happy Valley don't realize this or he'll be shouting "WHAT" into his new iPhone4 next season while playing Angry Birds.

To be fair, Paterno has won about 75 percent of his games. He's had something like 5 undefeated seasons and numerous 1 loss seasons. In 12 years Kirk's best finish was a 2 loss season and a ranking of 8th. Kind of a stretch to mention Kirk in the same breath.

Technically Ferentz's best finish is a 2-loss season and a #7 final ranking (last year). He's had 3 of those 2-loss seasons.

This is a serious question: when was JoePa's last title? He hasn't won one in a LONG time, since joining the Big Ten and since the shift to the BCS. He hasn't had the same level of success since the times changed (which is what some people say about Ferentz).

I'm only playing devil's advocate here.

You're right about the 7th ranking, my mistake. Unlike Ferentz, Joe Pa is a legend and deserves to leave on his own terms regardless if they haven't had the success of previous decades.

Joe Pa's stats since 2001 are 79-44 with 5 seasons finishing in the top 25 AP. Ferentz over that time is 85-41 with 5 seasons in the top 25. Joe Pa's performance the last decade has left Penn State fans calling for a change while Iowa fans with a similar performance are annointing Ferentz a legend. Really it's somewhere inbetween for both. Both coaches have been good since 2001 while neither has been great. Penn State fans seem to have much higher expectations from a coach. I excluded 1999-2000 since that isn't fair to judge Ferentz.

I wasn't referring to fan expectations for PSU, and whether or not JoePa should get canned. The OP said that if JoePa has only won 2 (with a couple more that could/should have been) titles in 45 years, then how can we say that Ferentz won't win any? My response was that times have changed since JoePa last won one. JoePa is the original, and Ferentz is a throwback. JoePa certainly has earned the right to leave when he wants, I don't dispute that at all. He just hasn't had as much success in the "modern" era (meaning the last 20 years) as he did back in the day. And Ferentz is similar in his philosophies.

I'm not sure we'll ever win a title under Ferentz, but I'm generally happy with what he's done (I will admit to being frustrated at times).
