Impressions of Lattimore?

I thought he'd have made a bigger name for himself by now. Does Kirk play Daviyon over Lattimore if he's significantly better, or will Lattimore get the Kirk Ferentz union card (Marc Morehouse term).

Iowa plans to play a bunch of Dlinemen. Phil Parker wants to rotate them and keep them fresh. Lattimore is solid and had a strong spring camp according to Parker, who also said he was stepping up as a leader.

Both he and Nixon will get plenty of snaps.

I think our defense will be good to go.
I wasn't kidding when I said we could be a top 5 defense.
I get what BF was saying about the O taking care of the D, but he needs to just worry about moving the chains. Moving the chains is the ultimate in taking care of the defense.
I'm pretty confident that Wisconsin isn't going to push our DL around this year.
Could this be the year our lines finally get back to being the bullies of the b10? Could be. Stay tuned.
Lattimore has the size and experience. Hopefully he has the strength and a little nasty and he should have a good year.

Keeping it real, any fan that says Lattimore has lived up to expectations is deluding himself. So far, he's been a disappointment. Simply put, the guy just hasn't made plays when given the opportunity.

This is his last chance, so hopefully he'll go all out this year and have a break out season. I'll be pulling for him.

I think people need to be a little more appreciative of the work our DTs do. They are the blocking eating machines protecting the LBs from getting mauled. Iowa has a litany of players at the DT position where it took 2-3 years for them to grow into the position...so their junior or senior year is where they really shine. Klug, Ballard, M. Nelson...didn't start making waves until their junior year. I don't even think Mike Daniels made significant notoriety until his senior year.

Lattimore, my guess, is ready for a break out year...but I think he's played pretty well over the past year or so. He's played behind some pretty good players...Jaleel Johnson, M Nelson, N. Budg-a-da.

I think the DL this year is pretty intriguing. There is some natural size in the mix in Shannon and Nixon. There are power and speed rushers...and some great, great athletes. One thing Iowa has always done is teach the game and how to play fundamentally sound in the trenches. Size is just a huge bonus. At 280, you can move AJ anywhere you want...and bring in speed rushers on the outside...he's a mismatch with a center guard also. It's going to be fun to watch.

Who’s expectations? He was a 3 star recruit, his best offer outside of Iowa was MSU. Michigan didn’t offer.

Typically DTs don’t accrue big stats, they do the dirty work inside. He started games as a true sophomore, played tons of snaps last year, and will likely start this year. I’d hardly consider him a bust like you and the OP seem intent on doing.

Don't waste your time. Die Hard should die hard. This guy will be one of several keys to what may be one of the best front lines at Iowa in a long time. And, they will go 8-10 deep and reload for 2020. Book it.

Where did anyone say "bust?" Being a bust and being a disappointment (thus far) are two different things. I think most fans simply expected that he would be more impactful at this point of his career. That's not an attack on him - it just is what it is.

Last season, despite his "ton of snaps" he had 9 solo tackles and 1.0 sack. By comparison, Jaleel Johnson, in his junior campaign, had 22 solos and 3.5 sacks. Mike Daniels had 23 and 4.0. Also, subjectively, both were much more disruptive on plays where they may not have actually generated a statistic.

As I said, I'm pulling for him. If he and Nixon live up to their potentials, we could have an outstanding defensive line rotation.

Johnson and Daniels both redshirted, Lattimore did not. I think this is the year for him, I anticipate him being at least the equal to what Matt Nelson gave us last season (which was a damn good DT).

Reiff should also be at least every bit as good as Brinks.

And the big boost is going to come from Nixon/Shannon/Schulte being difference makers on the #2 line (my hopeful thinking).

That's a fair point. Hopefully, he becomes more impactful, and ends up being another Iowa d-lineman that makes it to the next level.
