I'm not a believer yet....

I for one absolutely love what i'm seeing on the floor this year! I'm actually excited for basketball again and I do think we have "turned the corner". Go Hawks!

I enjoyed the Ohio State game more than any Hawk game I've watched in several years. I actually got excited for the team. We'll beat a few teams and continute to improve. These students are having fun and actually being stimulated by their coach and the pure fun of competing in Bball in the Big Ten. Looking forward to watching them play and develop this year and next.

I certainly hope your blog is about something other than college hoops. You know zero about basketball. I know you want to get under everyone's skin but you have to actually know something...a couple of facts to support your position...before your pointless comment/post can even be elevated to the level of being an opinion. Anyone that knows anything about college basketball knows this team isn't "terrible."

I actually did in another thread. And I know plenty about basketball. I'll let my posting history on multiple basketball sites speak for that honestly. And actually the comment in this thread was tongue in cheek and actually the original "we're terrible" comment was a throw way comment that everyone latched onto way too much. Than again I love how on this site if anything negative is said that is actually defended you just get attacked personally.

Cue some more you don't love the Hawks, root for ISU, you're an idiot posts. Like those are productive.

How is "we're terrible" without any facts or defense backing it up not worth any negative attacks? If Iowa is terrible, please tell us exactly why we are terrible and not improved since last year?

I never said we weren't improved from last year. We are, I stated why I think we are terrible in another thread and maybe it was too strong of a word. If people want to get that ****** off over semantics that they insult me than whatever but I just don't see how it can be argued that this isn't a bad basketball team. An improving one but still a bad one.

Anyone that can't see the promise of our freshmen doesn't know squat about college basketball. These kids have improved as the season has gone on. That's more then what you could say about the last two coaches at Iowa.

I do agree that the personal attacks aren't necessary. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and we shouldn't be attacking someone who feels the team is terrible no matter how misguided that opinion may be.

If Fran can land a top recruit here or there then Iowa City is going to be rocking on some of those cold winter nights in Iowa. The winters are pretty nice down here in Atlanta, Georgia but the summers are totally miserable.

I like reading this forum because of the different opinions, I disagree with bcl but appreciate his opinion, the hawks have not had a good recruiting class in a long time, when Fran improves the talent base the success will follow, but this team is not terrible, watched Penn State today they are better than i thought

The 2010 class is very good, so far and we haven't had another class develop in some time, especially freshman.
With recruiting people get too caught up in rankings and such, but it comes down to what fits the program and I think Fran knows exactly what he is looking for. Iowa will be a good program before we know it and it could be as early as next season.
Basabe was a 3-star kid that had offers from some bad Major teams, like Iowa, Boston College and look how he played against OSU, I expect him to continue playing that way, maybe not at that level every game, but in that fashion since he is healthy.
Marble and McCabe are in the same situation, 3-stars that had some offers by not so good Major schools.
Iowa is going to develop players that have ability to good players, unlike the past couple coaches.
Don't read into too much of the PSU/MSU game, MSU is vastly overrated this season, they have a lot of issues on that team. Mainly, they have no real post players. If PSU continues to let other players not named Battle actually attempt to score like today, they may be better, but individuals rule that team.

I like this post. I ask one more time...how is "Iowa's depth" an issue?

I don't think I can pass any judgment about how Coach McCaffery's career at Iowa will pan out in only a handful of games. What I do like is the fact that I can watch us be competitive and actually have hope that we may win each game. We used to be beat by half time.

The trend that I want to see change is retaining our talent and recruiting some BIG bigs. We are so young AGAIN -- hats off to our Juniors who have really stepped up in the first year of Fran's system and made a great effort. But I want to see Marble, Basabe, McCabe, May etc. all stay through their senior years and really grow in this system. Likewise, I want to see them be the leadership for our future classes so getting familiar with the system isn't a cold reload after 1/2 the team transfers (see Todd Lickliter HC Iowa).

I agree

I also agree with the fact that you are still rocking the NBA Jam avatar

Probably still beating the Sh**t out of his wife.

Steve Garvey never beat up his wife. He cheated on her and had a woman in every city but didn't beat her up. Just sayin.

I'm willing to give a mulligan after the game yesterday. Once in awhile, Tom Davis' teams suffered a beat down on the road, Alford's teams even more and Lick's, well, no need to replay that history.

I'll attempt to answer this question.

Here are the players on Iowa's bench that have been getting minutes.

Marble
McCabe
Brommer
Archie

Marble has, by necessity, been playing out of position for much of the season. McCabe is solid, but as a freshman is inconsistent. Brommer tries hard and has improved, but he can not match up against most Big Ten frontlines. Archie is only averaging 7.8 minutes per game and hasn't been terribly productive with those minutes.

Iowa needs another point and a better big and they would have a much more solid bench.

The team does take a couple of steps forward and then manages to take three steps in the other direction. We are a young team and we will struggle on the road. No, this team is not loaded with talent and at times, does play poor basketball. HOWEVER, we are passing the ball better and we do have some good, young talent that just needs more experience and more support.

Fran has this going in the right direction. He will win at Iowa. After the past seven or so seasons it is easy to say "here we go again ..." But you do need to keep in mind this is a new coach with a new system with a lot of young players. And no, we don't have the caliber of young players that many of the big boys do but Iowa basketball has not exactly been a hotbed of places to play in the past seven or so seasons.

The name of the game is recruiting. Fran has connections. And he needs time to establish those connections. Considering how long he has been at Iowa I think he is doing an incredible job. Fran will get us back on track. Patience will be the name of the game and for many that is not easy, especially after many years of not-so-good basketball at the U of I. I like Fran's intensity. I like his vision. I like his coaching style. He just needs to get all of his pieces into place and that is not going to happen with one recruiting class.
