Some folks are probably gushing about the "ratings" of the OL commits we've gotten over the past year or so. However, the thing that REALLY strikes me is the progress that it sounds the 2009 OL recruiting class has made!
Not only was Nolan MacMillan ALREADY practicing with the #1s during camp last summer ... but subsequently VERY positive buzz has been generated about the strides being made by Boffeli and Van Sloten.
This is tremendously reassuring ... because remember how things transpired after we landed the much hearalded 2005 OL recruiting class? It seemed like almost all the guys from the prior OL recruiting classes, with the exception of Olsen, kinda packed it in. It was almost as though they figured it was a forgone conclusion that the highly touted guys would just walk into starting spots. Heck, the walk-ons kinda fell off the radar too ... that is, with possibly the exception of Bruggs and Big Wes.
Now, as we look to the future, as we're going into the 2010 and then the 2011 seasons ... again we're looking at a scenario where we're having some pretty highly touted guys entering the picture on the OL. However, in contrast to what happened before, it really looks like the guys from the '08 and '09 classes are not going to be content even giving up an INCH. My bet is that EACH AND EVERY OL starting spot is going to be battled for at an exceptionally high level ... and NOTHING is going to be won easily.
I absolutely LOVE IT!!!
Do you-all realize the implication this is going to have on the future of our beloved program?
Imagine having 2008-like offensive-lines nearly every season .... pretty freakin' cool!
I'm so happy that the coaches learned from any past errors in managing egos and in recruiting. I really think that we, as fans, are going to truly reap the rewards!
And, BTW, I'm as excited as anybody about the upside of guys like Scherff, Donnal, Blythe, and Walsh (and anybody else we land in the 2011 class) .... however, they're going to have to EARN everything they get ... because it ain't gonna be easy! And that FACT is going to make them better players!
