I'm gonna miss the Big10

Now that it looks like it's more a question of "when" or "by how much" in regards to expansion I'd like to go on the record by saying, "I'm going to miss the old Big10".

For one thing it's going to put a serious den't in my goal to get to all the big10 away football stadiums over the next 5 years. For another I'm going to miss playing scUM or Penn State nearly every year. Those matchups will be replaced by new ones, which over time may even become bigger and better than their predecessors, but I'm going to find my self longing for the chance to ruin Penn States national title hopes, or to repeat the beat down in the big house, or to finally win that big game in the shoe.

The only advatages I can see to a big10 super conference are money (and lots of it) and the fact we can tell the SEC to suck it. Loosing such a big chunk of tradition is a big price to pay for that.

Me too.

I am a traditional sort of guy. I did not like it when Penn State was added and I am not in favor of adding another team. I am definitely against adding 3 more!

Big 10 expansion does not favor Iowa.

I,too,am a traditionalist, who is not all that excited about expansion.
ND is the only addition that really would not cause me any discomfort,as ND almost seems like a traditional rival for Iowa due to our past series' with them.
I hate the mega-conference concept. Add one...that is it. If not ND, then it becomes a reach for me. Texas would be a cash grab, which makes more sense than Mo.,NE.,Rutgers or Pitt.
If we add one, then we still would play Michigan,OSU and PSU enough to keep them as real rivals...anymore than one...not good.

But, I also realize that change is never embraced, especially by old guys like me...I was ambivalent about PSU...and I like having them now. I say ND or Texas...tradition or cash...the only reasons to do it.

I'm 34 so it's not like im an old crumrudgen pining for the good old days. I just love me some rivalries that date back 70 years.

I don't mind expansion but only if the big ten is on top. Right now the SEC is the best football conference. They have been for a while. I would prefer to become the best with the current teams. I don't think we are far away and then expand. Maybe it is this living in the south and hearing about the SEC in football and the ACC in basketball all the time that wants us to be the best prior to adding another powerhouse.

I agree with this. Is anyone else worried that adding Texas would result in a loss about 9 out of 1o years? Sure it sounds cool to add Texas and to play them but that makes Iowa's road to Pasadena that much tougher. Looking at Deace's proposed alignment OU and Texas would be in Iowa's division replacing Minny and Wisky. Sure we might play them in our few games out of division but the thought of not playing them every year doesnt sit right with me. There is nothing i enjoy more than ending the year with a beat down of Minnesota.

Long ways to go on all of this and it will be interesting to see how it plays out. In my opinion im not sure the extra money is worth playing in a super conference with 4 of the top teams in college football (Texas, OU, OSU and PSU). We have enough trouble getting to Pasadena the way it is

It worries me. but I do love the idea of Michigan and OSU not playing the last game of the year for the conference title(if they end up in the same division which I think they have to.)

Really this is about cash, more than anything. I honestly do not see it actually improving the conference in football or bb overall...maybe a bit on recruiting in Texas or the East coast if we add Texas or Rutgers...but lets face it, the SEC is like Saudia Arabia, sitting on a pool of natural resources that the midwest will never match...not gonna happen. Kids normally stay close to home, and there are more good football and bb players in the East/SE/SW and West coast ....way more.

My only real hope for expansion is that it allows the Big Ten to maintain the edge financially that they do now enjoy. If we lose that, along with our recruiting disadvantage, the Big Ten will be in long term trouble...

I will not miss sharing the B10 title, when going undefeated, with a team that you weren't scheduled to play.......unless you had a B10 championship game. Would 2002 have turned out differently had we won the B10 champ game v. OSU, and then beat Washington State in the Rose bowl? Or possibly the Fiesta (chamipionship) bowl v. Miami?

I don't like the "if that happens then Iowa will neve win the B10" argument. There are lots of arguments pro and con to expand. "They are better than we are" shouldnt be one of them.

I really didn't like Deace's alignment. I hope Barta will fight to keep atleast 1 of our Rivals. if we lose both I think we risk losing a lot. especially in markets we recruit. We play hard nosed football and we would be stuck with 6 spread teams. The big 10 need to keep in mind Texas would be joining and shouldn't dictate all the terms. I'd be fine with Texas & TA&M but not a 3rd team from the Big 12 even if it was Nebraska. I'd rather it be from the Big East and let us keep Minnesota on our side.

I am refering to Deace's alignment from this morning show (Mizz being #3)

Any alignment that doesnt have us playing Wisky and Minny (or scUM fOSU for that matter) every year should be rejected on principle.

Iowa doesnt carry a big enough stick to reject a deal based on who we are aligned up with. My guess is UM and OSU dont really care if they play Iowa or not. We are a small voice in this whole deal

You misunderestimated me. I meant it would have to have scUM and fOSU play each other.

You gotta BEAT the best to BE the best...some of you guys think that Texas would be an automatic loss. Do you remember watching them this past season, they were very beatable. They had the back and forth game with A&M and struggled against a down Sooners team...and then barely beating the Huskers in the B12Champ game. You're telling me that Texas coming into Kinnick for a match-up wouldn't get you giddy like a school girl?! ;)

It would be awesome but looking at the past ten years Iowa would lose that game more often than they win it. My point is i dont see what Iowa gains from Texas joining the Big Ten. Adding another Goliath to the conference makes things much more difficult for Iowa

I don't mind expansion as long as ND is LEFT OUT. Nothing would be better than to see ND looking in. Then I would like to see the Big 10 teams quit scheduling ND so that ND doesn't get the best of both worlds as they do now. They schedule three or four Big 10 teams a year, no wonder they don't want to join. They already play half a Big 10 schedule!

If Big 10 teams quit playing ND, they would have to look elsewhere for teams, which would hurt the dummers.

I wouldn't mind not playing OSU at all because we can't beat them anyway and haven't since the big 10 was formed. PSU probably would love to get Iowa off their schedule.
