Illinois QB situation

Lost both top QBs in span of 24 hours. Jeff George Jr transferring and Crouch is done with football altogether. Maybe Wiegers should have tried to go there but too late I guess. They are gonna be a special kind of bad again on the offense this year in Champaign.

No, they have a kid that is the future. Crouch isn't D1 material (or FCS either). George could have been OK, but not great. He cannot run and that doesn't bode well for a young line. He did well against Iowa until the really bad INT that changed the game in I think the 3rd. The new kid is young. Iowa showed interest in him.

I bet Wiegers wishes he’d have known that before he left.

He could have gone there and started in the B1G for a year.

I assume any Big Ten team that Iowa plays in 2018 was probably off limits as a potential transfer for Wiegers. So any Big Ten West team, or PSU, MD or Indy would not have been signed off by Ferentz.

I am not sure if Ferentz could do anything if Wiegers wanted to transfer to Iowa State, nit sure how the grad transfer rule works once a player graduates.

Heck, even when Rudock transferred to Michigan in 2015, it almost backfired on Iowa, because Iowa almost ended up playing Michigan in the Big Ten CCG in 2015. Not sure if Iowa would take that chance again if another QB wanted to go to Michigan.

Serious question...

Does Ferentz (or Iowa) have the power not to sign a GT release or limit the teams he can play for?

I've looked in the rules and I don't see anything limiting that, but I could very well be wrong.

I have wondered about this too. Is a grad transfer essentially a free agent that can sign with any school he wants?

My assumption is that Big Ten schools losing a grad transfer have the power to block any transfer to another Big Ten school if they object. Essentially Delaney can onvoke executive privaledge or something like that to block any internal Big Ten transfer if a school losing a player objects.

I'm 95% sure Iowa has no say in where he can go if he's a graduate transfer. He completed his schooling so he's essentially an unrestricted free agent.

I don’t think completely unrestricted.

Doesn’t University a graduate transfers to have to have a post-graduate study in the field the graduate was graduated from.

4 graduate in on sentence = F in English

Under the old rules a graduate transfer could only got to a school that offered a program that your previous school didn’t offer. Under the new rules graduate can go to any school regardless of the programs.

I think they are free agents pretty much. So long as the major they are taking up isn't offered at the previous school is the only hook that I'm aware of. That said I'm glad Wiegers didn't end up at Illinois. I can't see that being a fun atmosphere for being a one and done QB. He'll win more and have a better overall environment where he's going and good for him

I think since he knows he’s not an NFL’er and that he’ll play his last game ever this year, I’d have to say if it were me I’d maybe like to play in the Big 10 for a season just to be able to say I did it. If he really was close to Stanley he’d surely be able to step in at Illinois. He put in tons of hours and hard work for the Hawks and never played a meaningful snap in 4 years, I think I’d want the opportunity to play on a semi big stage.

It’d be pretty cool to tell your grandkids that you played Penn State and Wisconsin on national TV even if you got your butt kicked.

That's certainly a logical mindset for one to have as well. He may have factored that in and not cared or who knows. No idea for sure. Different strokes for different folks. Maybe if the IL Qbs had dropped out prior to him deciding that would have factored too. Timing is everything as well...

I found this. There is a Big Ten rule against Intra-conference transfers

https://saturdaytradition.com/big-ten-football/coaches-restrict-grad-transfers/

By B1G rule…

“Rule 15.01.5. Intra-conference Transfer Rules. B. Post Matriculation. A student-athlete that has signed a tender from a Conference institution and has triggered transfer status per NCAA Bylaw 14.5.2 (conditions affecting transfer status), may not represent an alternate Big Ten institution in intercollegiate athletics competition until the individual has completed one (1) full academic year of residence at the alternate (i.e., certifying) Big Ten institution and shall be charged with the loss of one (1) season of eligibility in all sports.”

In other words, Rudock had to win an appeal with the conference to be allowed to transfer to Michigan and become immediately eligible. He also had to enroll in a graduate program that Iowa didn’t offer — he pursued a Master’s in movement science to become a doctor — and wait on the Big Ten Academics and Eligibility Subcommittee to approve his appeal. Obviously, it did and the rest is history.
