Illinois fires Beckman

I don't think I can recall a coach ever getting fired a week before the season starts. There's got to be a lot more to this story thats not getting out right now. Its probably just the tip of the iceberg.

When you can fire a coach without having to pay him out of the contract...it's always the best option. The funny thing is, Illinois will most likely spend most of it defending themselves. I just can't believe this was the best hire they could make 3 years ago.

Okay, you opened the door.

I have always been puzzled by the firing of Zook. Based upon how he could recruit there was a certain level the program could have reached and stayed at that was better than anything they have been able to get to and maintain since! Ever. They went to Rose bowls with Butkus on their defense and mike white as their head coach, but they never maintained anything either time.

Wasn't firing him a worse move than ISU Fire Danny Mac? And I thought that at the time that they fired him.

Am I wrong?

Sometimes, sometimes when you make a change, things get worse. (had to say it) IMO, isu firing Mac was simply insane because he literally had the program at the highest level in their entire history, by quite a ways. Illinois at least has some history, geographical recruiting base, resources, etc. ISU...has...only...well...the ability to beat Iowa.

That's why you don't fire someone without a firm confidence in landing someone you know is better.

I have to agree with Thawki about Ron Zook, I thought he was a good coach for Illinois and did some good recruiting when he was there. Getting rid of Zook I thought was a bad move for Illinois.

How in the hell does a clown like Beckman (no, really, he looks like a f'n clown) get a gig as a B1G head coach in the first place?

You know what kind of coach I really respect?

The kind who doesn't get all emotional and act like a f'n four year old getting his donut bogarted by his older brother.

Poise. Confidence. It trickles down.

If any jagoff reporter ever asked me about what I'd do to "keep the momentum going" or "turn around the momentum" I'd answer, and not untruthfully, that "momentum" is just code for "mental weakness" i.e. allowing external events to dictate internal focus and fortitude.

Unbridled emotion is for mentally weak losers.

This is how a winner and role model behaves:

not that I don't agree with your post to some extent, but what do you think of Fran then? Would you consider him a mentally weak loser?

He's not a mentally weak loser, except when he can't control his emotions. I actually respect him quite a bit, but I'm embarrassed for him when he goes into Feces-Hurling-Monkey-Mode.

I would consider him as someone who is not behaving like a role model for young men when he loses his cool. I don't think that freaking out really inspires anyone to improve their performance.

I understand that a coach must yell at times to be heard, and I respect intensity, but I think a person with, for example, Hoiberg's demeanor is more effective over the long run. That calm confidence is contagious. You don't want your players to internalize freaking out as an appropriate reaction to adversity.

I agree with this. It annoys me that Ferentz gets criticized for it, because it's the way to go - and many many former players have said he gets plenty fiery in practice and in the locker room. There are legitimate criticisms of Kirk, this isn't one IMHO.
