I'll post it now..."When did you first suspect"...

...Iowa's team was in trouble this year..."

I know, I know, this is a thread usually started at the end of the year.

Seems to make sense to start it now.

And my answer is...of course...the 1st 10 minutes of the 2nd half of the UNI game.

Alas, I just don't see any improvement using the same players, same plays and same coaching.

Game 1. glaring lack of anything in the backcourt was pretty obvious

The shooting woes are what bother me. Nothing against the guys we currently have, but the fact is that Iowa is a hotbed for juco basketball and there were a number of guys in neighboring programs that could have done wonders for this team, whether it be shooting or the ability to get to the rim.

On a side note, if I'm Fran I never take a team to the locker room again at half time. I simply don't understand how a team can come out as poor as we have the last few games to start the second half. I'd address the team for maybe 30 seconds and then let them scrimmage each other until the other team comes back out. That way, if the past 2 games are any indication, we might forget there was a half time and save ourselves 10 minutes of terrible execution.

Well, it's pretty clear that halftime is when everything turns. At halftime, I told my wife "Iowa has a 6 point lead, but we still have the second half coming... That's usually the problem." And sure enough, UNI scores the first 8 points of the second half, and never really were challenged after that.

What I'm not sure of, is Fran just getting outcoached that badly at halftime and has zero answers for how to counter it? Or is Iowa just that far outclassed by any good team that adjusts at halftime and comes out focused in the second half? A little of both? It's been a constant theme.

When Texas bullied Iowa around in the 2nd half. Texas is a better team than Iowa, but they just did whatever they wanted without any fighting back from Iowa. For some stupid reason, I thought Iowa would be beyond that, I was wrong.

Had to be the NW game in teh BoneG tourney last year. If you weren't suspecting after that debacle then I'd like to sell you some knives and I'd like you invest in my new fund to help firefighters and policemen buy Christmas presents for needy orphans in Kajagoogoostan.

In all honesty I think its a little of both. As I said, with our mental toughness (or lack there of) I seriously don't think I'm saying anything to them at half time and just getting keeping them moving. The way we've came out of the locker room the last 2 games, IMO has shown a mentally exhausted team that looks sluggish and unmotivated. In all honesty I've seen them come out for shoot arounds with more focus, energy, and emotion.

For me, it was when we got into the top 10 last year and everyone got all high and mighty about how awesome Fran is. That was the kiss of death.

When Marble graduated.

He carried the team last year on his shoulders. I knew when he left we'd take a big step back.

The loss at home (especially during the 2nd half) to ISU. At the beginning of the season, I really thought the key to this year was Clemmons' development. I was fairly confident that he'd done the work to overcome that Soph slump. I was convinced he'd be one of the most improved players on the floor. That has not happened yet (will it ever?). I really think that Fran needs to start Jok, White, Gessel, Oleseni, and Uthoff. Jok struggles defensively, but Clemmons and Ogs both struggle offensively. Woody is too inconsistent offensively -- so I don't think the offense would be any worse off with Oleseni in there.

But they all played so well in Prime Time League.

I still had a little hope after NYC but I was getting nervous. We did fight back in the Syracuse game. After ISU bent us over and took our manhood in the 2nd half, I felt we were in big trouble. Then when UNI gave us more of the same in the second half the other night I now feel hopeless about this season. That is back to back horrible second halves. Fran better practice his locker room speech.

Last season. You lose Marble and somehow this was hoing to be a BETTER team?
