...Iowa's team was in trouble this year..."
I know, I know, this is a thread usually started at the end of the year.
Seems to make sense to start it now.
And my answer is...of course...the 1st 10 minutes of the 2nd half of the UNI game.
Alas, I just don't see any improvement using the same players, same plays and same coaching.
On a side note, if I'm Fran I never take a team to the locker room again at half time. I simply don't understand how a team can come out as poor as we have the last few games to start the second half. I'd address the team for maybe 30 seconds and then let them scrimmage each other until the other team comes back out. That way, if the past 2 games are any indication, we might forget there was a half time and save ourselves 10 minutes of terrible execution.
Well, it's pretty clear that halftime is when everything turns. At halftime, I told my wife "Iowa has a 6 point lead, but we still have the second half coming... That's usually the problem." And sure enough, UNI scores the first 8 points of the second half, and never really were challenged after that.
What I'm not sure of, is Fran just getting outcoached that badly at halftime and has zero answers for how to counter it? Or is Iowa just that far outclassed by any good team that adjusts at halftime and comes out focused in the second half? A little of both? It's been a constant theme.
The loss at home (especially during the 2nd half) to ISU. At the beginning of the season, I really thought the key to this year was Clemmons' development. I was fairly confident that he'd done the work to overcome that Soph slump. I was convinced he'd be one of the most improved players on the floor. That has not happened yet (will it ever?). I really think that Fran needs to start Jok, White, Gessel, Oleseni, and Uthoff. Jok struggles defensively, but Clemmons and Ogs both struggle offensively. Woody is too inconsistent offensively -- so I don't think the offense would be any worse off with Oleseni in there.
