Ike Boettger

So does that mean you can get two medical red shirts, but you can't red shirt once, then get one medical red shirt?
Essentially that's correct. If you voluntarily redshirt once, you're done and that year is gone permanently.

To get another redshirt, the previous one has to be out of your control such as an injury before the time limit, or in some cases a coaching change, etc. That's why Ferentz said he more than likely won't get to play next year, but that since we got a new OL coach they might try to use that as a reason on the application. Since it's an assistant rather than head coach, I'd have my doubts.

Correct. The first RS year wasn't due to injury, he won't get a medical hardship.

This is why it is silly to RS someone on the two deeps, who can help your team. Vandeberg got an extra year because he didn't RS and then was injured, but played less than a certain % his injured year.

So say Stanley goes down in game 4 of his Sr year, he can RS and play another year. If Wiegers goes down his RS SR in game 4, too bad, no 6th year. The only way to get year 6 is to show that the RS year was also for medical reasons.

It will be good when they rule a player to get 5 years to play 5 years. No RS needed, no medical exceptions given.

This is also a reason why I don't get super upset when true freshman play if they're ready. If you're at an injury prone position like OL or DL, you can deal with a season-ender that occurs early in the year because you have the redshirt in your back pocket.

Boettger red shirting as a freshman may have cost him a career in the NFL, or at least hurt his chances. Just to be clear I'm not faulting Ferentz for red shirting him (team comes first obviously), I think the fault lies with the way the rules are written.

Well Ike wasn't physically ready as a RS Fr being a TE in HS and slotted to play OL at Iowa. So there was never a doubt he was gonna RS.

Having 5 years to play 5 makes so much sense and should be adopted. Hopefully that gets done soon.
