If you were Iowa's O-Coordinator

Just for fun, pretend you were Iowa’s O-Coodinator and you got to decide what offensive personnel and scheme to use to give Iowa the best shot at winning.

For the sake of this fun little exercise, pretend that Captain Kirk has no veto power to go ultra-conservative on your play calling, plus the Captain’s ability to punt when the Hawks get inside the opponents 40 yard line has been taken away.

Here’s my gameplan:

• LeShun Daniels becomes my featured tailback
• Jordan Canzeri is now the backup RB and is used as the 3rd down back in all 3rd and long (3rd and 5 or longer situations)
• Mark Weisman is used as short yardage and goal line back
• Damon Bullock is used exclusively as a slot WR
• The 3 tight end package is utilized heavily when teams are stacking 8 in the box
• The middle of the field is actually targeted with some slant and crossing routes to CJ and KMM
• Some presnap motion and misdirection plays are actually put into the playbook
• Damond Powell is on the field for at least 20 snaps a game
• The out route pattern to either KMM or T. Smith where the ball is thrown 10-15 yards across the field to pick up 2-4 yards is removed from the playbook and burned
• Jake Duzey and CJF are targeted on play action passes at least 6 times a game

Yeah, don't use the juke stick move in the middle of the field because the running back will fumble too often.

All good stuff.

I would build in more straight ahead power runs with a guard pulling into the hole. All 4 RBs can get good yardage with this play sort of like Weisman starts every game getting, he got great yardage against wisky in the first half with more straight ahead runs.

I would slip the fullback out of the backfield on a slip block more often to slow down the rush and throw him the ball, it has been an efficient play this year.
I would throw a halfback pass and maybe even have the QB be the receiver clear across the field.

Still run the zone blocking stretch play but not as much. I would have canzeri in for more speed and put him and bullock in the slots and on the field at the same time.

If our receivers are a weak point I would make the passing game more of a sit in an open area for 5 yards type of pass but I like the idea you mentioned of slants. And crossing patterns are hard to cover.

Very nice to see an intelligent response to a thread topic instead of some moronic reference to Madden play calling or some lame *** attempt to discredit a thread topic.

I agree about slipping the fullback out of the backfield for receptions too - I would even like to see Duzey or CJ sometimes line up in the backfield and then pop out in the flat - different looks at least gives the opposing defense something else to plan for.

If you were Iowas Offensive cord. you get to do whatever kirk would let you do. Next you should day dream about being the manager at McDonald......what would you serve?

use a lot of 2-3 TE sets. If healthy, Weisman should be at FB. Rotate Daniels and Canzeri at HB. Goal is to get each of these guys 15 carries per game.I know using a fullback for carries is "old school" but maximize talent. bullock is the 3rd down back because he can catch fairly well but is not as good at seeing holes and cutback lanes. Should have at least 5 planned QB runs per game. Lots of play action passes.

There, not exactly stanford but it SHOULD improve offensive production.

Read the original thread Einstein - I know that Captain Conservative has the final say on all the playcalling, which is why I stated that for this fun exercise to assume that Kirk's handcuffs on the playcalling have been removed.

In response to your McDonalds inquiry, here are my suggestions:
-Keep the McRib on the menu all year long
-Bring back the Strawberry Sundae flavor topping
-Bring back the Butterfinger McFlurry option and add some other candy flavors (Snickers, Twix and Whachamacallit to name a few favs)
-Start serving Curly fries

You started a thread about "IF" you were Iowa's O-Coordinator and you expected people to take your hypothetical question seriously? Yes, you received moronic responses because this thread is moronic.

Greg- Kirk can I pass it?

Greg- Kirk did you hear me?

Greg- Bubble yum!!!!!!

Kirk-(looks up from drawing in his coloring notepad) What!!!!!????

Greg- Can I pass the ball

Delay of game.

No way, would not do it. I am not going to pretend i am smarter than i am and a coordinator i am not. An advisor to patterns and tendencies maybe. I am able to put a few things together from watching so much ball, but a whole game is way way harder.
Besides you all are harsh and i have a fragile ego. :)

Did you not see the redskins fullback get all three TDs on Sunday. The pros still use the FB plenty,

Well, against Wisconsin, I would have thrown the ball every single time when I got to the red zone...and I would have moved the pocket several times in the red zone to buy time. We were so damn predictable it was ridiculous. I was with a bunch of SEC guys and we called run or pass before the play and were right at least 90% of the time. It was ridiculous that we could tell in the formations that what was coming. Funny thing, we called the 1st down throw from the end zone too. Gee, I wonder if the Wisconsin D coordinator knew what was coming. I'm pretty sure he's watched a few more hours of film than we have.

I still think we have to come out and establish the passing game and have success. I'd like to see us come out and throw on every down for the first two series of the game. If we are having success, keep throwing it on EVERY down. Teams need to know we can throw the ball and win games. You'd be surprised at how much a defense will change if you can do that. Balance is a misnomer. Great, you were balanced and you averaged 1.2 yards a carry against MSU. Nice work GD. We have to prove to teams we can beat them passing...or certain formations are going to get 8-9 in the box all the time.
