If Norm were to call it quits after this year....

There was a poster on CF that said he'd heard a rumor that McCarney might be a candidate to replace Norm whenever he retires. I'm not saying the rumor has any legs to it, just curious as to what you guys would think about that? Personally I'd love to have Mac as a DC. That's really what he's best suited for, and given his history with the program, it seems like a perfect fit to me.

And before ANYONE throws out "The Cyclone Years" as reason to turn up a nose, remember that Dan Gable was from ISU.

I will fall over in shock if our next D-Cord does not also have the last name Parker. I would put it is 99.99%.

I agree completely. I'm not asking if you think it will happen, just what you would think of it if it did.

I would not have a problem with it if he was the DC and his only intent was to be DC........I realize KF and DM are roughly the same age, but if some under the table type agreement is made that Dan will be KF's transitional successor until someone is groomed for the gig......then I am not sure, it would be something I would have to think about.

Mac is a competitive guy, obviously I do not know him, but his demeanor and mannerism would indicate to me that he has unfinished business as a HC. Would he only take the DC job with intent of succeeding KF?

I am pretty confident in Kirk making the right decision for his program so i would be okay with it. I think DMac is a good guy and i have no doubt he still bleeds and black and gold...and always will. Tho as i said it will be Parker :)

No way McCarney gets the job. He'd come in and change things up too much, and he may not want to leave his current gig. Plus there's still too much clone residue on him for my liking.

Promote from within. Coach Wilson, Coach K...lots of good options that already know the program, Coach Doyle and KFz's approach.

Why would we scrap a great defensive system with a lot of long-term assistant coaches who know how to implement it, for an outsider?

Answer that question for yourself and if you can come up for a reason to hire MAC, there you go.

It'll be an internal promotion. No doubt about it.

As far as what I would think if it didn't happen, I wouldn't like it, but it's not going to happen.

If I were to handicap it or give it odds , I would do it as following:

Phil Parker 3 to 1 : Continuity and he just seems like the logical choice.

Ron Aiken 5 to 1 : Highly respected former DL coach great teacher movitator. Has a lot NP characteristics.

Dan McCarney 10 to 1: IMO, There would be some changes, but not as much as people think. High energy, motivator, kids would love to play for him.

Darrell Wilson: 15 to 1: Frankly, don't know much about him other than he is the linebacker coach. I could be wrong on this, he coached special teams, not sure if he still does or not. Given the linebacker play the Hawks have had I think you can at least throw his name out there. I need to check his bio

Somebody not on this list: 2 to 1.

I doubt there would be any truth to this rumor beyond speculation. I also agree that this hire is going to come from within... BUT...

McCarney has a great gig that I wouldn't see him leaving unless there is a complete Gator D meltdown. He would be a great option if he was interested and don't think he'd actually change things up that much. I think he'd look to playing to the strength of the team, and bring a high energy personality that quite frankly would be a little refreshing (this is not a knock on Norm by any means).

Parker will be the DC when Parker retires. No way KF brings in a new face when the next man in is on the bench already. I like DMac but not at Iowa anymore.
