If Iowa Gets A 6 Seed: Potential NCAA Matchups

At least 3 games to go, so this is still subject to change of course, but assuming Iowa holds serve and gets a 6 seed in the big dance, I thought it would be fun to look at who Iowa could potentially face in the first game or two.

This is based on Joe Lunardi's current bracketology seedings. I allowed a margin of error of +/- 1 seed. I.E. a 10 seed could slip to 11, a 12 could rise to 11. Based on that, here's a look at a pool of likely opponents, with the current projected seed listed.

I assume we won't get paired up with any Big Ten opponents in the first two rounds, so they aren't listed. I'm not sure if we'd get paired up with teams we've already played this year, either, but I included them anyway.

1st round:
Stanford (10)
Oregon (10)
Pitt (10)
Colorado (10)
Xavier (11)
BYU (11)
St. Joe's (11)
Arkansas (11)
Harvard (12)
Green Bay (12)
Dayton (12)
Tennessee (12)
Southern Miss (12)

2nd round:
Duke (2)
Virgina (2)
Villanova (2)
Syracuse (3)
ISU (3)
Creighton (3)
N. Carolina (4)
Cincinnati (4)
Louisville (4)

Who would you most/least like to get paired up with from this group? I'm not sure any of these 2 seeds are likely to drop to a 3.

Pretty much anyone in round 1 except maybe Arkansas and anyone but duke, Syracuse, and Creighton on round 2.

I would love if Iowa drew Southern Miss in the 2nd round and then played UNC in the 3rd round.

I want nothing to do with Creighton.

If I had to pick a double digit seed that I would like to avoid it would probably be UW-Green Bay.

Agreed with windsor on BYU in the first game. Their list of big wins is short. Southern Miss even less.

It's hard to pick a 3 seed.. None of them are "easy". Don't think I care to see Syracuse. They would be a difficult 3 if they regain their mojo.

I'm not sure I want to see UNC or Louisville rise to the 3 line, either. Although I haven't seen either team play much this year, I have to believe they each still have plenty of talent and athleticism. Maybe I'm thinking more in terms of tradition than what each team actually has this year.

Im actually curious about that matchup. Creighton isnt unbeatable as we have learned late. I havent watched a ton of their games, but I think Iowa could handle them with some smart D. I would like to think that Fran could outcoach McDermott.

Intriguing match up for sure, and you may get your wish. I'm sure they are beatable, but they look pretty tough. Twelve Top 100 wins, and zero losses outside of the Top 100. They beat Nova by 28 and 21 the two times they played them. Doug McDermott is a beast. Would have to contain him to have a shot.

I have watched Creighton a few times this season and they are very dangerous. They play really well together and are an excellent three point team. They were up by 40 points on Villanova in Philadelphia in the second half. Villanova who will probably get a 2 seed......

I could see Creighton make to the Sweet Sixteen.....

Wouldn't want to play Louisville either.....

If Iowa plays defense against Creighton like they have for the past 2 weeks, Creighton would score 110 points against the Hawks.

From the first draw I would like to play UW-Green Bay or Harvard. I know UWGB played Wisky and Virginia tough. I just want a first round matchup where our depth and athleticism will overmatch the opponent. The one team that isn't on that list that could still play their way in that I want to avoid is Okie St. I also don't want to play Arkansas.

Next round I would like to play Cincy as they haven't been playing good ball lately. Or, hope for an upset in the first round and get one of the lower seeds.

I'm pretty sure Iowa can't play Xavier in the first game since they've already played each other this season.

1st game, would like to avoid these teams:
Oregon (high scoring team, like Iowa. Seems like a dangerous 1st game)
Arkansas (swept Kentucky, lost to Florida in OT)

2nd game, would like to avoid:
Cincinnati, Louisville, Syracuse

2nd game opponent that might make the internet explode:
Iowa State

I don't want anything to do with Harvard.

Come on guys. Don't you think that maybe, just maybe, Creighton would have an off shooting night against the hawks? :)

Creighton spaces the floor better than any team I've watched this year. Them and Syracuse are the teams I don't want any part of if at all possible.

yes anything is possible, it happens all the time when teams play Iowa;), except Minnesota, Indiana, MSU, Villanova, etc. etc. etc........................

I don't want anything to do with Minney....oh wait, they aren't getting in.
Nebbie says hello.....

Would LOVE to see Iowa play and trounce Creighton! Not positive they would do it but would be great if they did.

You know you're cursed when Aaron Craft becomes Reggie Miller when he plays you.
