If Ferentz doesn't pick it up, Fran will be the new man on campus

If you were around during the Lute Olson era, you would know that this isn't true. Olson was idolized. Bob Commings, not so much.

I was, people loved lute and he packed the old FH...loved that place. Commings was not popular. FB tickets were easy to get, and people took advantage of the access...and still dwarfed the purdue crowd from saruday, any Indiana or ku crowd.

I look at it as having "another" man on campus. Ferentz will always be the man, but we could use another one. Bielema and Ryan both seem to be respected at Wisconsin.

Of all the things to criticize KF for...

Fernetz is a good coach, however, the football fans are dying for a boisterous coach like Fran.
With all the issues that Ferentz deals with off the field, he seems to have the personality of Lick and is afraid to say anything. It also doesn't seem like he really has a "quiet confidence" either.
The team is a reflection of their coach, supposedly and doesn't seem to play with a ton of emotion and football is a sport that no matter how workman-like you are, there are times that emotion rules...for instance losing to Minnesota the last two years when that program is in shambles and to ISU a program who didn't know who their QB was until their opener...not good, but their players were emotional and that showed in the result of the game.

comparing him to Lickliter is silly. KF has his faults but he won two conference titles and led Iowa to its first undefeated conference season since the 1920's when Howard Jones was on the sidelines. But to you he lacks confidence. I'm sure KF is hurt by your no-confidence vote.

My criticisms with KF and staff are solely on how they failed to replenish the roster with athletes on defense following up on the 2008-10 defenses. Yes, emotion rules the day and that is definitely the way to go. If we are using Paul Rhoads as what KF should be, no thanks I'll take KF's approach over Rhoads' team having some emotional wins (Iowa this year, Nebraska his first year) and a whole long list of absolute butt-whippings (including two by Iowa).

Iowa does not have an elite program (though I do suppose that depends upon definition). I could see the argument for top 25 ever though considering the last 10+ years we have dropped considerably in my mind.

The last 10 years have certainly brought us down. But if Fran were able to get us to pre-Alford levels, or even a little higher that (and sustains it), we could very easily make a case for top 15.

In a sport where 68 teams compete for the national championship, top 15 qualifies as elite, IMO.

I like Fran's style and personality, which is what is needed to sell our program to recruits and fans who have drifted away from the program.
With KF,we got a technician, who needed to reload on the fly and win,as the fans never left. He suceeded.
With Fran we absolutely needed more a showman who can carry a tune for a couple of years while we start back up the ladder.
I am pleased with both coaches as a fit for our two flagship programs.
Now, the bottom line for both coaches is that they must win. For Fran, all those great interviews will start to sound hollow if we do not start challenging for upper half of the league by his 3rd or 4th year. Crean is finding that out as he pulls in great recruiting classes. As for IU being more of a bb school than Iowa....they have 7600+ student season tickets sold this year for mens bb. Iowa might have 1000+...Iowa is a football school, gang. When Hayden had the Hawks back in the 80's he was bigger than Lute, and Mr. Davis....both sports were big and complemented each other, really.

Again, you're WAAAAAAAY over selling the program. We have gone to 7, count that SEVEN, sweet sixteens in 108 year history of Iowa basketball. They have been to one final four in my father's lifetime...

That is not a top 15 program of all time.

I have a hard time putting us there too after minimal research. I could see 25-30's without putting too much work in it (therefore it's not the strongest case).

Yeah, I never thought of Iowa Basketball as being Elite. A very good program, yes - at least until Alford and Lick. But never elite.

There may have been a stretch in Lute's days and Mr. Davis's early days where we may have flirted with that kind of territory, but it takes more than a couple big years here and there to reach that elite status when you're talking all-time.

This may be true anyway, but you do have to admit that's easy to say when you look at the current attendance, and the product that we've seen on the floor the past 4+ years.

What did student ticket sales look like in the 1990's when basketball program had a winning tradition? That's the real question in my mind. I'm betting it was quite a bit better than it is at present.
