To have the team get off the mat after last game and to come home to a half empty arena and do what they did in the 2nd half/OT is wildly impressive. I was ready to cast off Payton at halftime. Dix seemed to be the only bright spot. (What a player he is Hoiberg was singing his praises after the game)Between the half full gym last night playing a hated border rival (and I get the kids are still on break) and the lack of any discussion of the OT and exciting win last night on this Board, it does seem that Iowa MBB apathy has hit an all time high IMHO.
I texted a buddy last night that Fran seems to have lost his team. Then the second half happened and I texted back and said Never Mind. He texted and said he forgot the game was even on.
I have defended Fran a lot over the years, but absent something compelling happening this season, its hard to ignore the overall direction of things in MBB.
It's worth keeping in mind that every player has an individual ceiling.I used to be really put-off by Fran's sideline antics, and his childish outbursts at the referees are inexcusable for a grown man. But at this point, I'd love for him to get back to his chair-slamming days during timeouts to get his players' attention. Maybe things came too easy for him last year as a FR, but Freeman needs to have a fire lit under his ass...he's lollygaggin' it out there most of the time. Remember how last year the coaches said he was just 'scratching the surface' of his potential? Pryce Sandfort needs a personal defensive coach to improve his defensive footwork. The list of needed personal player improvements is endless. Does Fran have the fire in his belly to push this team like they need to be pushed?
I can't remember which coach said it but "the bench is a great motivator" needs to apply to Iowa's effort on defense.I used to be really put-off by Fran's sideline antics, and his childish outbursts at the referees are inexcusable for a grown man. That'd be a great practice if Iowa could stay healthy....we're unfortunately so short handed we are using walk ons in spot duty pretty much on a the reg. He also showed Ladji and Traore the bench last night either way tho.I can't remember which coach said it but "the bench is a great motivator" needs to apply to Iowa's effort on defense.
The women sold out that same arena because they had the greatest female basketball player of all time and the most transformational female athlete in a generation, who happened to grow up in Iowa. That is a set of circumstance that makes the Power Ball seem like good odds. We are already seeing that interest in the women's program is regressing. It is still awesome and the fans are showing up, but without CC bombing 30 footers, its honestly not even close to compelling, must watch TV.The only thing the men’s basketball team needs to get fans back is great effort. Iowa men’s basketball is consistently at the top of the NCAA in scoring. Their problem is they don’t give any effort on defense and rebounding. We all get tired of watching them go out and let a team continually drive the lane for layups or kick out for a wide open three. Letting Wisconsin score 116 is just effort and pride. It’s been like this for most of Frans tenure. We have gotten tired of watching them look great on offense only to see some bottom tier teams boat race them. If they would toughen up and give great effort consistently then the fans would show up. The women are selling out the same arena with “bad” facilities based off of a former player. That will change soon if they continue to give the kind of effort they gave in the first half against Maryland.
Enrolled students should never be charged to get into an athletic contest, ever. Football included. Have a student ticket on an app and you'd be able to monitor it no problem. Move the basketball student section to the sideline, free entry, and however many seats there are there should be enough free pizza every night to go around. Let Pizza Ranch plaster their name all over the stadium and make 100 pizzas a night, when it's gone it's gone. Pick 5 marquee B1G home games and put identical free t-shirts on the student section seats to make it stand out on TV.People forget that if you get better on D, that typically brings back the O. More balance is really what fans are looking for and that will make people come back? I really like Iowa's style of play and Fran has proven he can recruit to it.
Results, also, Iowa is one of the top teams in the sport for wins over the last decade. Iowa wins, they win a lot and they win at home despite having a fan base that ignores it.
Something has to be done from our administration aspect. Carver sucks. The fan experience is much better from home. The facilities always have a line. The 2 ice cream stands they have always have a line. There's no TV's around the concourse. There's no bars around the concourse. There's limited food options. There are no mobile food vendors. Going to the bathroom is the worse. They don't do very many contests during the time outs. No music is being played or there aren't crowd interaction media to get the crowd pumped up. This is like the bare minimum the school should be doing to improve our product. Every single D possession should have something on our jumbotron pumping the crowd up to get behind it's team. They do almost nothing with crowd participation. No juice. They throw out T-shirts? They have sponsored shit like the burrito life anymore? How bout a partnership with Hy-vee where they have you make a full court put for something a little more than $50? They bring absolutely nothing appealing to that atmosphere. They do the absolute bare minimum as far as marketing. They took away PTL. The team used to travel around Iowa back in the day as well. No investment into the fans, the fan experience or working to get fans back engaged. Yes, Fran is responsible for some if not most of that. The home slate in the OCC is garbage. Has to be addressed, need at least 2 or 3 OOC's every year against higher end competition.
Honestly, again, this is my opinion, Iowa has been plenty competitive enough and they win, a lot. A lot more than most programs. For Iowa fans, that's not enough.
It would, and make it under 10k seating. If there were things to do outside the arena leading up to the game, it would change almost everything.I think we should move to the X Stream Arena in Coralville. We would sell it out.
