I thought ISU lost to Nebraska

Either that or they celebrate losses. Their fans took the field to congratulate the players. From Rashawn Parker in the DSM Register- "There were a lot of people down there congratulating us, one wasn't. He was saying some pretty bad things, things that disrespected our team and the players."

I was at the Wisconsin game, but I don't recall our fans taking the field let alone congratulating or disrespecting the team and/or players.

Maybe because the 2nd year coach took a top 10 team down to the wire on there home turf. No matter how overrated you think nebraska is, thats where they are in the standings and there only a 1 loss team. Maybe they wanted to congratulate the players on a hard fought game. But is this really what you want to complain about on monday morning. How a fan base stands buy its team and players through thick and thin.

I don't see what the big deal is. They very nearly beat Nebraska in the final game of the series, when Nebraska was in the top 10. We aren't talking about Oklahoma here. We're talking about Iowa State. Those players deserved it. 'Congratulate' isn't really the right word, but the fans wanted to make it abundantly clear that they were proud of the effort the team showed. That was one helluva game, and the Clones should have gotten the W. I really wanted them to win it with Arnaud, because he deserves to get a win like that in his career. Kid has done nothing but work hard and play tough (though inconsistent) football, and a win on Saturday would have been the defining moment for his career.

They didn't try to win the game in regulation even though they had momentum, timeouts, and the wind. They sat on the ball and played for overtime. You deserve to lose win you play not to lose. Silly Clones. Wait a second....

Ummm...maybe because our loss to Wisconsin was a loss that shouldn't have happened? Missed XP, wasted opportunities in the red zone, allowing the game winning TD, a horrific final offensive drive/2 minute drill?

Meanwhile, ISU's a good throw away from upsetting Nebraska, aka a game they probably shouldn't have won. This is an ISU team in their 2nd year under a new coach, and after getting crushed by Iowa, Utah and Oklahoma, upset Texas and nearly upset Nebraska.

If Iowa were a 6-6 type team last year, and had nearly pulled off the upset of tOSU, I would have still congratulated the players. May not have celebrated the loss, but certainly wouldn't have been angry. On the flip side, if Iowa was a 10-2, 11-1, 12-0 type team, and blew the game against two opponents they should have beaten (now nearly four), then I would be furious.

Fans cheered for them after the loss because:

The players played with unbelievable heart. Nebraska had the players and we had players with a will to win. We tackled so well. We broke tackles for first downs. We fought back in the fourth quarter. We answered their TD in overtime. They never quit and they played like a team you can be proud of. For that I will cheer on those college kids.

If fans know that you gave it your all, they will cheer for you. Well most reasonable fans

You don't think we had fans disrespecting the team and players after wisconsin? We had fans doing that at Indiana yesterday. It was like they didn't even realize they were surrounded by players' parents as they bashed the team through out the game. Funny how it was those same people who never actually cheered.

Evidently, all of you who think celebrating losses to top 10 teams is a great idea are too young to remember Hayden Fry. In his first year, Iowa lost a close one, something like 21-7, to highly ranked Oklahoma in Norman. After the game, Hayden told his players if he saw one of them accepting praise for playing competitively against the Sooners, he would punch him in the mouth. He went on to say that his program would be judged on winning games and not playing teams close. He saw no honor in losing regardless of the score of the game.

I think I prefer Hayden's approach to storming the field to celebrate a close loss. Although, I guess when your team lets Utah hang 68 on you, you best celebrate losing a close one to a quarterbackless Husker team.

Your an idiot. Do you really think any players celebrated? They were in the locker room in tears after the loss. There is none of them that believe in moral victories.

But it is perfectly fine and appropriate for fans to cheer on 18-21 year old kids for playing their hearts out in a great game. That's what we pay for. We go to football games to be entertained and that certainly happened on Saturday. Everybody wanted a win, but that doesn't mean we still don't appreciate the effort those young men played with

What are you talking about? My post was critical of players accepting praise from fans for a loss. After calling me an "idiot", you go on to acknowledge your fans down on the field praising the players for their great effort. All I said is this is exactly what Hayden did not want to see from his players, i.e. accepting praise for playing someone close. You may disagree, but I'll be damned if I'll accept some clone interloper coming on this board and telling me that their is not another way to handle a loss like this and frankly I find that other way superior. On the other hand, if you have to watch a team lose to a mediocre Utah team while giving up 68 points in the process, I guess maybe a celebration was in order.

And Cy made it pretty clear that the players weren't accepting praise or hanging their hats on a close loss. That doesn't mean that the fans can't offer praise or let the team know that they are very proud of the effort. This thread calls out the fans for going on the field to convey that to the players. You're calling out the players. They aren't going to accept praise. I'd be willing to bet that none of them said anything.

Two things:

1) Before calling someone an idiot, you should probably try to learn the difference between "your" and "you're". It just makes you look dumb.

2) You just summed up the biggest difference between Iowa and Iowa State fans. Iowa State fans go to games to be entertained. Iowa fans go to games to see the team win.

What are you talking about. The players were hanging around accepting congrats from the fans just as I indicated. My point is there is another way to handle this and that is to get your *** back to the locker room and not be letting people tell you what a great job you did in losing the game. That was Fry's point 30 years ago and it is one I agree with. If you don't, more power to you and Cy, but what makes you think your approach is superior to Fry's approach.

I'm not saying one is superior to the other. I just don't care either way, and don't see why on a board full of fans who claim not to give a rip about ISU is making a deal out of something that has NOTHING to do with the Hawks.

a loss is still a loss. as long as you congratulate your players for losing a game even like that, the attitude will never change. And that's why they're Iowa State.

You're right, the fans should p*ss on them after every loss. Builds character.

I couldn't believe it when I saw the ISU coaches going for OT. They players obviously wanting to go for it. Why? Because there's frickin time on the clock!?! Play smart and don't turn the ball over. What do you have to lose? I thought how stupid could your coaches be? Then I remembered OSU... d'oh! Seriously tho, wtf were they thinking about going to OT verse Nebby? They had the game, then blew it...

I stopped by ISU's game to tailgate after the unneeded Iowa heart attack special. Their fans had their heads held high after the game. I'm like, uh... you just lost? ISU fans, "That was Nebraska man..." over and over again. The fans were happy they lost a close game. Un****inbelievable... They were literally happy... "Good game!" etc, etc. It was bizarre.

You couldn't help but take pity... It truely was a sad sight to see so many happy that they had lost.

They were proud of how the team played. Never had a coach tell you to walk off the field (after a loss) with your head held high, because you played your heart out and gave it your very best? There was plenty in that game for them to be proud of.

So you lose a game.

Fan comes up to you afterwards and says "great game. You guys played your hearts out."

Are you suppose to tell that fan to fVck off? Or do you kindly say "thank you."

This thought that it is wrong to applaud kids for playing hard is ridiculous. Nobody in that stadium was happy we lost. Trust me, I, unlike most here, was at the game. We got kicked in the stomach when the PAT fake didn't work. But some people appreciate the work that these young 18-21 year old men did on the field on Saturday and wanted to show the men that they were behind them. What is wrong with that?

Is it better to boo the kids after a heartbreaking loss or let them know you are behind them?

But you Hawk fans are right. It is better to boo players on senior day than to applaud them for their 4 years of work. (Shada)
