I think this quote by Coach Lickliter is about Jake Kelly

It could be about Smith,Freeman,Peterson,Palmer,Davis,Tucker,or Kelly...take your pick. Or even Dairese Gary, who has turned out to be an excellent pg. If Gary had stuck with Iowa, things could have been much better,we have struggled at that position ever since lick walked in the door. Gary is a stud.

• On the current group of Hawkeyes: "We're asking young guys who are learning while they're playing to overcome veterans who learned from veterans."I suppose supporters argue this isn't Lick's fault. In year 3 veterans should be on the team!

"• On transfers: "Sometimes young people have to go through the experience before they fully understand and appreciate (what they had)." Somehow I doubt any of the transfers wishes they were going through this year here at Iowa...maybe I am wrong.

• On his relationship with his players: "We invest together. We work together. We accomplish together." Yes they do...they seem to play hard for Lick...

Asked if the foundation – the current group of Hawkeyes – is set and the incoming freshmen are the next layer, "That's the plan," Todd said with a grin.

"I believe this team can see the light, …that they know we're knocking on the door, … that it's turning the corner," he added. "This team is well-respected. This (recruiting) class is respected."" Moral victories and close calls that is not going to cut it in the B10 ever. Well respected team??? I bet the coaches love Licks group and would love to see him continue his ways at Iowa. Most talking heads just call us "gritty" or "unathletic" or lacking a "difference maker". Incoming class gets ranked 7th in the B10 not sure that is good...considering those teams ahead of us will be getting that much better. My complaint all along is this group may be admirable but they will not compete for post season tourneys with these guys. Not in the B10...too tough to even go .500.

As the mafia guy said in Bronx Tales...Would I rather be loved or feared? It is better to be feared than loved....Iowa bb is not feared. Can you really respect a team that you do not fear? Ask Evan Turner.

funny you mention bronx tale - this is off the subject, but i was listening to a radio show recently that had some ex-mobsters as guests and they were asked what movie best depicted 'old school' mob life, or something to that regard, and they all agreed it was bronx tale, hands down.

I would say that Tom Davis' Iowa teams were "well respected".

Not sure you can say that about the current program when we are called such things as "irrelevant" and hearing comments like "Watching Iowa will make your eyes bleed".

Jake wanted to, and from what I am told still wants to, come back to Iowa. That's why I think this was a quote about Jake. Just my two cents.

I would agree that Lick is taking a little shot at Jake with that particular quote. It would be interesting to see how the question was phrased. The context from which the quote came would make a big difference if for instance...he was asked specifically if he keeps in touch with any of his transfers and if he knows of any of them wishing they were back at Iowa...if on the other hand he was asked a generic question about transfers...I would say that it is the job of the coach to talk some sense into guys who want to transfer rather than just to get pissy and let them leave.

I don't think that it was a shot at him at all. Lick knows that he wants to come back and Kelly knows that Lick showed him class and grace by writing a letter on his behalf.

You never know what you had till it is gone...

I ultimately agree with what you are saying there, in Jake's case, there was a lot of discussion back and forth before he left. The coaching staff worked with him a lot on getting him to stay. On several occassions it looked like the transfer was going to be avoidable, just didn't work out.

On the other guys - they are all different. I think Davis was leaving regardless, JPete tried to leave and the coaches got him to stay but he then left the next year. Palmer would have stayed if he could have figured out his role (I don't he or the coaching staff could figure that out). Tyler Smith was going regardless.

I do agree, though, the staff needs to do all they can to retain players. That's a vital part of their job.

This is the case, IMO, as well.
Lickliter went out of his way to write that letter on behalf of Jake. And now Jake is seeing the grass isn't always greener, Lickliter is just commenting on it.

Sometimes players make mistakes. This was one of them that I think both Iowa and Jake would have liked to have back.

I'm not trying to bash Lickliter...but I don't think it would be very well received in a previous job that I had if I had lost a top client and then went around the office making snide remarks about that client.

It can be difficult to talk sense into 20 year old kids...but it would seem to me that if Kelly really heavily considered coming back to Iowa this year given all that it would take for him to do that...there was probably more that could have been done by the staff to try and keep Jake.

The other thing that has me a little chapped and sways my opinion in this scenario is the Tony Freeman situation.

Wait did someone say Situation?

The least sensible thing I can think of as to how the staff might manage the available scholarship would be to give it to Jake (tying it up for two years for one year of play) rather than giving it to a guard who could help us next season.

Therefore, based on past observations of the "riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma" that is this staff's scholarship management philosophy, that is exactly what I predict they'll do.

With Lickliter's salary, could he allow Jake to walk-on and then pay his tuition? Or is that a clear violation? I don't know the rules.

you really think about it he could put his son on scholarship and then pay Jake's way, or is that still a violation?
then he would still be paying the same and he wouldn't even have to tell his wife about it
