With all of the rumors running rampant I think there is no way Lick comes back next season. The wheels are falling off the Iowa basketball cart. The blood is in the water and no way Barta can keep the sharks away. Now that the season is over the rumor mill and speculation will only continue to grow. The fact Barta did not come out and say that Lick will be the coach next season makes me think he is pulling the plug on the Lick experiment.
A couple of months ago Barta stood firmly behind his man. But with a lackluster finish and a growing disgruntled fan base, even Barta can't ignore what has happened to the Iowa basketball nation.
The program can't move forward with a fan base that is tuning out. You can't ignore the economics. Iowa fans are not going to settle for another season of Lick basketball. It is time to cut the losses and move forward. Bringing him back will only alienate more fans and through the course of the season I think Barta has realized that he can not stand alone and say Lick is his guy and continue to ignore the demise of Iowa basketball. Iowa basketball is bigger than Barta. It is bigger than Lick. The University of Iowa has been around for much longer than either of them and it will continue to be in the future.
The time is now Barta. When something is not working the biggest mistake you can make is to continue to do the same thing and expect different results. The Lick experiment did not work. Iowa basketball deserves more than this. Ninth and 10th place finishes are not acceptable.
Lick is a very nice and humble person (have met him on two occasions) but that should not be the deciding factor on if he remains the coach at the University of Iowa. I don't know the immediate solution for a new coach, but I know we can't keep living this storyline for another season.
