I need help

Can somebody please fill me in on some of the calls that were made yesterday. I referee basketball for kids anywhere between 1st- 10th grade; I'm not certified but I like to think I have a pretty good idea of what is going on. I also played ball in college for two years, so I guess I would say my knowledge for the game is above average? I know what it's like being a ref on the court and having players, coaches and spectators just ride you constantly; therefore, I honestly try my best to keep my mouth shut when spectating in the bleachers or on the couch. However, yesterday was not the case. I have narrowed it down to two reasons:
1. I had myself so convinced that Iowa was poised to make a run in March that my empathy for the refs had completely disappeared.
2. The refs were as bad as they seemed.

For now, I am going to settle with the 2nd option.

As much as I didn't want to create a whole new forum bashing the refs, holding in my frustration was ruining my work day.

Instead of spending my time today streaming the Iowa v. Purdue game, I have gone back and watched some of yesterdays game. I have added some links to some of the plays that caught my attention.

https://vine.co/v/O9jYmW9YjAi (Gathers with two hands, puts ball on ground, doesn't touch ball with 2nd hand until gathers on hop step... by then you can see ref has already blown whistle)

https://vine.co/v/O9IZJazBBrn (Probably irrelevant, PSU ended up missing shot; just looks shady right in front of ref)

https://vine.co/v/O9Ib3WKjnJM (Pretty late whistle...)

That's all I have for now... were many other times in which we had PSU trapped near half court on in the back court; looked like they were taking a lot of steps.

Anyways, I should probably get back to work.

I know, I'm a baby... wah wah wah

You'll be much happier if you just accept the outcome and look forward to selection Sunday. I don't intend to watch anything from the BTT until Sunday. This tournament is dead to me. That's how I'm dealing with it.

That was a gorgeous block by Gabe BTW. The whistle on that call was completely anticipatory.

Yes, they were bad calls. It's sort of bad luck, and the fact is that bad random outcomes happen from time to time. I'm chalking this up to a vent post. Nothing wrong with that. But you'll probably feel better to just let it go. There's nothing the team can do about those now, let alone any of us. So why hold on to the heartburn?

It should make you feel better that the law of averages will work it's way out, so next game we should expect more balanced luck. It's possible we'll get more bad luck, but also possible we actually get a favorable break and have a wrong call go our way.

And if that doesn't help, just remember that it is a gorgeous day (here in the midwest) on 3/13. And that's a nice break in all our favors.

The double dribble call on Clemmons is bad. I can't see the ball but it looks pretty obvious that he didn't double dribble. If there was anything... looks like it would have been a travel.

In regards to the 2nd... perhaps a little push off but not enough to warrant a call. I think White may have backed off a little more than normal due to the area on his body of the push.

In regards to the 3rd... I don't really care about how late the call was. As an official you are taught to have a patient whistle. I'd much rather have a whistle come in a little late and get it right than start to anticipate things. The issue here is the call is wrong.

Bad calls happen every game with every team. The only thing consistent with refs now is to keep total fouls close between the teams by the end of the game. The rers didn't lose this game for us. Our poor shooting and attitude by the team lost this game. That being said I did have a problem with the goal tending call and subsequent technical. The non call on goal tending was so obvious and horrible by the refs. They should have to answer for it. I'm not looking for punishment, just an admission that they made a mistake. Of course it won't happen because refs are considered perfect by the BIG and only a select few can say something.

The double dribble call is a result of AC turning the ball over as he takes off with it. It's the old "palming" call that is now called a double dribble. That is when it's called at all. I see guys lift the ball all the time while dribbling and it is never called.

Kinda ridiculous to pick that one instance out and let all the others go. But, what are ya gonna do. Is it a bad call? No. It is very very inconsistent though.

To be clear, Iowa lost this game all by themselves. It wasn't the officials. And to give credit, psu wanted this game and they earned it. Congrats to them.

I think we were all upset with everything yesterday. One NCAA win washes it away.

No, it doesn't. If Iowa had gotten a 6th seed, they could be playing the 3rd seed in the second round. As an 8th seed, they would be playing the 1st seed in the second round. Probably won't matter - this team wouldn't win its 1st round game if they had a bye...

Reviewing the play, it may have not been goal tending. The ball was below the rim & had no chance of going in. It wasn't on the rim. I'll do a little more research with the rules. The ball wasn't on the rim or in the cylinder. The ball was actually below the rim. It is clear that if the ball was on the rim or in the cylinder it was goal tending. I mean it really is a gray area.

Let's check & see if the crew is officiating tomorrow!

I am Huck Finn. You are going to get an upvote from me because, as Mark Twain famously said..."There is nothing more irritating than a good example." And you gave us a few of them...a few among many. BT basketball officiating is absolutely an embarrassment...whether we win or lose. thank you.
