I like KF's 7-4 record in last 11 against ISU

And this includes that embarrasingly stupid loss in 2007 to Cheesedick's first ISU squad simply because KF wouldnt take the wind and play defense in the first qtr. I think it took awhile for KF and KOK and now GD to face the reality that ISU blitzes and sells out on defense to try to beat Iowa.

I was amazed at how well Norm Parker's defense kept us close and how well the hawks fought in KF's first two losses to ISU. We should have been totally outmanned by Danny Mac's established program and we had chances to win the first 3 games in the KF regime.

A win by the hawks leaves KF 8-4 for the last 12 in the series which is right on par for the overall series stats.

KF needs to push that out to 13-4 by 2020, and then he can retire with dignity. That would be a befitting mark for an Iowa HOF coach like KF. Must dominate ISU as one of the standards.

I agree with you. I will admit that some of KF's losses at Ames come down to simply not taking the wind and putting his great defense on the field to start the game, probably 3 losses.

If the hawks win fairly big on Saturday then I see ISU going into a real funk in this series and you may be correct about a big KF win streak in the offing.

in 2001, Mac completely kicked our tail by knowing his stadium, his team and our deficiencies. When Iowa State went into the wind, they threw a fair amount, but it was short chain movers. Iowa scored on essentially every drive with the wind, but that was like 4 or 5 drives with the wind all day. Against the wind, Iowa was putrid.

Yep, this is one of those strategies that I dont think KF will ever get. KF is a very good head coach, he is a little too conservative maybe and too risk averse or doesnt calculate risk-reward very well, but his time management is getting better , as witnessed by him taking timeouts with 6-7 minutes left against Ball State.

I'm thinking we bring the Athletic Budget in at the beginning of the fourth quarter as kind of a secret weapon. "Athletic Budget" is code for Beathard.

He needs to erase the ISU 9 out of the last 16 record. Capt. needs to win at least the next two to get it back to .500. 9 recent loses to ISU is embarrassing.

I agree that 7-4 in the last 11 is good. The frustrating thing about this series in the Ferentz era has been Iowa's almost complete inability to win a close game. ISU wins all the close games, and Iowa (with the exception of '05) wins all the blowouts. Since Ferentz has been Iowa's coach, the margin of victory in ISU's wins has been 6.6 points, with a high of 20 (take out that 20, and the margin is 4.7). Iowa's margin of victory in their wins has been 16.3, and the Hawkeyes' only win by less than 1 TD was last year, a game in which the Hawkeyes dominated until they went soft in the 4th quarter. Iowa is 1-5 in the Ferentz era vs. Iowa State in games decided by less than 7 points.

Jumper,

In your professional opinion, do you believe that Kirk Ferentz intentionally allowed ISU back into the game last year so that people could no longer say that he has never won against ISU when the margin of victory was a TD or less?

Thank you for your time.

I mean, what other explanation could there possibly be?!

That 3x over time game was nice. KF decided to punt it away late in 4th quarter on a 4th and 1 or 2, and play defense. He forgot that the defense that year wasn't very good. Just another head slammer.
