I Knew It Was Bad, But WOW...I Didn’t Think It Was This Bad

The scary thing is, rugby-style punting wasn't much of a help, either.
I’m actually a fan of the rugby punts. I’ll give up a little bit of distance to have the ball bouncing around like a rabbit and not allowing the return team to set up blocks and drive to one side or the other.

I agree and the really good rugby punters can sometimes drive it at an angle past the returner for big change of possession yardage. The hawks best teams have always been good in all three phases. A poor season or game performance in any one area usually means defeat or a big struggle.

This season the offense needs to have fewer games of 10-14 points and consistently move the ball and score at least 24-28 which would have equated to 10 wins last year in the regular season. The DLine can help the new Lbkrs in the run game and the Dbacks in the pass game by getting a good rush. We have a good kicker, two of them, but need the better punting for sure and if special teams blocking and kicking are very good as they mostly are then the special teams should be very good to average again. Just cant be poor.

Sure, when the ball is punted across the 50-yard line. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case WAY too many times.

The punting was atrocious in 2017. Iowa needs a solid punt game. It really is a staple of Kirk's recipe for success. It has to be better this year for us to eclipse that 7 or 8 win ceiling. I hope with an off-season of intense focus the matter will be handled.
