i just don't see Barbee

Is Barta going to hitch his coattails on a Calipari disciple? I don't think so... too risky.

Let's see...

He was the lead recruiter for Calipari, that included a scandal surrounding Derrick Rose. He was also the academic advisor for Memphis...as if that is a feather in his cap.

Yes, he's put together a nice recruiting class at UTEP, but my guess is that he is able to get a lot of kids into school down there that he couldn't in the Big 10.

There is a difference between hiring a mid-major at a school like Dayton, Butler, Rhode Island etc... and UTEP, New Mexico State, etc... because of the academic requirements.

I think this would be an incredibly risky hire, and I can't honestly say that given his body of work, I would even prefer him to Forbes or Davis.

Wasn't Barbee gone before Rose? He has been at UTEP for 4 years.

Not saying that there isn't some concern w/ what you are saying. I definitely worry about the academic standards and recruiting a different type of player at Iowa.

Barbee doesn't have the eye-popping name recognition required for this hire IMO.
Barta needs to fill seats and I don't see this guy congregating the masses.

Yeah he was gone well before Rose, the original poster has no idea what he's talking about. He's improved every year at UTEP, he runs the same Dribble Drive Motion offense that Calipari runs, its an exciting offense and it's effective as long as you have at least a couple guys who can create their own shot. He's done well recruiting to UTEP which is a Conference USA school and not in a nice town at all, if he can recruit there I think he bring talent to a Big Ten school like Iowa.

I think at this point we need to be much more concerned with winning games. With time and winning CHA will fill back up.

Basketball Coach Barbie, complete with Assistant Ken! Parquet floor and goal apparatus sold separately.

I just do not think you can draw conclusions on a guy until you sit down with him,and really dig into his background. Just having coached at Memphis years ago under Cal is not enough to deem a guy risky. What exactly do you cite here? Any specific charges ever been levied? What kind of recruits can a coach draw to UTEP in El Paso TX,anyway? Do his recruiting skills translate to the Big Ten level? This is why I am open-minded ...like I was with lick, altho I had immediate concerns. I was not in the room with lick when he laid out his recruiting plan, his staff plans ect. Clearly, I hope that Barta asks the right questions, and then gets the right answers. If not, he moves on.
It is way too easy to paint with a broad brush from 50,000 feet on these guys. Maybe Tony Barbee has had recruiting success strictly from hard work, strong sales pitches, and dogged determination to get his man....all honorably and above board.
He remains one of my favorites, but I have few facts beyond the surface stuff.
What we know is that he has proven able to build a team as a head coach with an impressive progression year to year. Davis and Forbes have not got that on their resume...yet.

Who would Barbee pick ? Iowa or DePaul and if it comes down to money which school will blink first ? DePaul A.D. was on CSN-Chicago a couple days ago and said they will pay whatever it takes to get the right person.

Sorry, but the Iowa job is just much better than DePaul. DePaul is buried in the Big East,a conference with a very uncertain future, with much talk of a breakup with football schools scattering to the ACC and SEC...leaving DePaul scrambling for a confernce..not good. Their arena situation is horrible. A good hour from campus in game time traffic. They do not have a football program to bring in the bread.
Finally, they have been bad for a long time, unlike Iowa, who was a #3 seed in the NCAA tourny only 4 years ago.

ummm ...

Believe it or not (difficult for most to get past their flawed perceptions), the offense under TL would also have been had he had the basic components. As I've stated (over and over) the combo of freshmen, average bball IQ, low athleticism and general apathy / frustration / weak attitude are why this team was so unsuccessful.

Execution, mental toughness, attitude. Execution, mental toughness, attitude.

Whoever the next coach is, I seriously doubt he will do no better next year than TL would have done as far as W's & L's (expecting 14 - 16). The "system" isn't going to fix what these guys lack -- the ability to hit open shots, making / receiving basic passes, involving the entire team in the half-court, challenging the defense / making the defense work, recognizing and taking advantage of what the opponent is giving you / where your advantage is on a possession x possession basis.

It might come down to where he would prefer to live. Iowa City or Chicago. I think DePaul would be willing to throw out the bucks if he is their top choice.

Where does it come from that he has done well recruiting as a head coach? I know stars don't mean crap but lets compare his 4 classes to Licks 3, these include next year's recruits and are scouts rankings:

Barbee's 4 classes:
10 2 stars
7 3 stars
1 4 star

Lick's 3 classes:
6 2 stars
6 3 stars
2 4 stars

How is this so much better recruiting than Lick?

I agree that each coach has to be evaluated on his own merits, but the people with whom one chooses to associate is telling. He chose Calipari, and he took part of Calipari's staff with him. Among them, Milt Wagner--who used his son as a bargaining chip to get a job from Calipari. Nice crowd.

An important issue is whether success in recruiting at UTEP or Memphis really prepares someone to recruit to Iowa. No comparison in terms of academics.

He's brought in guys that led them to a 26-5 record. I never claimed he was better than Lick at recruiting and who were Lick's two four star recruits? But I do know Character and Culpepper are better than any two guys that have played at Iowa during Lick's tenure.

Iowa is not hard to get into academically.... I don't know why people feel Iowa has such ridgid standards....

Do you honestly think all 85 players on scholarship on the football team are that smart?
