I don't think Lickliter Should be Fired

It is year 3. His 1st recruiting class where he got a full year to work and evaluate is the Gatens/Fuller class. They are only going to be Juniors next year.

I definitely think he deserves another year. We played this year with 1 freshman point guard. His reserve would not start at DMACC.

Next year we'll have a more serviceable guard who can relieve Paine, and we'll have more depth. Everyone will be a year older and a year stronger. Fuller is going to be good next year. Paine will have more confidence, and hopefully Gatens can be an offensive threat again.

Mediocre talent, with a freshman PG, and no talent to speak of at the guard position off the bench is not going to win games. It's a recipe for 30 point losses.

I think next year we will be better. We'll be an NIT bubble team. Maybe even better than that.

But 3 years isn't enough time. Especially considering that this program wasn't exactly rolling when Lickliter took over.

So none of the players that have left is Lick fault? These are Lick's recruits. Where does the buck stop on this, this young excuse is just that, an excuse. NIT bubble, you've got to be kidding me? This is exactly why we need to cut our ties now, Iowa basketball has sunk to a new low if the NIT bubble is fine, BS!!!!!

Iowa was not bottom of the barrell when Lick got here. Not in great shape but not at the bottom. Three years is long enough. If he didn't run off some of the transfers he wouldn't be in this position (that is his fault). If he took over Drake, who hadn't had a winning season in 20 years, when Mr. Davis took over then yes I would say yes he needs more than 3 years. Not here though, getting to the bottom was a lot of TL's fault, we weren't there 3 years ago but we are now.

Unless we have a wave of transfers again, I agree with you. I'm just not going to waste my time laying out the logical reasons for it (as you have done) because I refuse to beat my head against the wall on these boards. It's not worth the effort.

He needs another year unless, as I said, there are significant transfers in the next few months. (If you can't hold them team together, you can't make progress, even if you know what you're doing.)

Not to rag on you but couldnt you have posted this in the thread directly underneath this one titled "One More Year"?

NIT bubble isn't fine. But it's a step in the right direction. It would be a big enough improvement from this year, and I think it would warrant applause from about everyone.

I'd like to see Iowa Basketball making the NCAA Tournament 3 of every 5 years. 1 NIT every 5 years. And then our worst year be NIT bubble.

So we need to start somewhere.

Yeah if Fuller transfers this year then I think it is time to get a new coach.

Lickliter should be fired. The end. 3 years is a plenty to be judged. There has been ZERO hope, or nothing to get excited about.

I posted this in another thread but holds true here as well...

I've always been of the opinion that you must give a new coach (regardless of sport or level) a minimum three seasons to turn a program around. If there is any success in those three years you keep the coach on for a fourth and reevaluate after that. I've been a huge Lick guy and defended him with my buddies because of my "new coach" feelings. And up until the end of January I would have agreed with you. However, the team never got better. If there had been some improvement, some spark to say the Lick is the guy I'd still be on that train. Right now opinion is "They can't do worse". I truly feel that now is the time for a change.

Exactly! There hasn't even been a glimmer of hope the last three years. Why are people so blind to this? I think some people just think Lick is too nice of a guy to fire. Well, I could care less how nice he is. Being a good guy does not put numbers up in the win column.

I'm fine either way. Although I really would like to see all 4 members of this recruiting class make it to Iowa. I think Lick gets another year, but we'll see what that costs him.

You can't say there wasn't ever a glimmer. beating MSU in year 1 was a glimmer. but outside of that. meh. seeing JJ go off in the last minute in year 1 wasn't a glimmer but it was exciting, shame it wasn't enough.

I understand that people may like Lick and may want him to have one more year. But if it's true that current players and current Lick recruits (Gatens, Fuller, Brommer, you name them) met with Barta and said they were gone if Lick stays, keeping Lick is not an option. Matt Gatens is the face of this current Iowa program. Hometown guy, dad played at Iowa, mom was a cheerleader, etc, etc. If he wants out there is a real problem.
If Barta keeps Lick and any player, especially Gatens leaves. Keeping Lick was the worst decision possible. You cannot give the guy another year and then lose players and have to start over again next year. 10-23 next year will not fly for Lick. IT WON'T!!
There is virtually no possible way you can keep Lick another year. It would be a huge mistake. I'm not bashing anybody for wanting him back, but if more players are leaving he's got to go. PERIOD.
I also think that Barta's silence is bad for the Lick camp. If they were keeping him, Barta would make a comment saying something about how disappointing the season was but we are looking forward to everyone returning next year.
Does anyone recall a radio broadcast about a month ago where Bobby Hansen said that it appeared as though Coach Lick was starting to get along with the players better? That says to me that he was not getting along with some of them. Lick has not been successful, he's a fine guy, but he is leaving and people should just come to grips with it.

The last 2 days came about because of the possibility of players transferring next year. Virtually everyone has said that the only way Lickliter can stay as coach is if we have no transfers. That seems remote at this point so how can anyone say they want him to stay now? In fact, because of the threat of more transfers all Iowa fans should be calling for Lickliter to step down...not stay for another year.
