I don't mind admitting it.

I'm dreading the thought of Cole Fisher trying to cover McCaffrey out of the Stanford backfield. He's a great kid and I have no problems with his play but he's our weak link in LB coverage. I hope we have a better scheme than that for that RB. I'd rather go with a Nickle defense and play an extra safety to keep up with that kid.

Unless we can contain and get pressure on Hogan, there isn't a LB, or probably Safety in the country that can guard McCaffrey for more than 2-3 seconds.

The problem is their running game and oline is way to good to run a nickel against them very often.

Gonna have to play smart, have a Safety backup the LB in coveragr, and tackle well.

Probably the most dangerous player in the nation. Desmond King would be able to cover him and that's about it.

How did Northwestern do it so well?

I didnt watch a lot of the jNW game but on highlight shows they said jNWs front 7 was disruptive, slowed down their run game etc, probably got pressure on Hogan and they got turnovers.

Stanford is playing much better than that first game.

The hawks need to go for penetration to mess up run blocking and get some QB pressure.

Cant give big cushions to receivers. Last game of the season for these great players so let them play I say. Some gap run blitzes and QB pressure.

Offense needs to open it up also.

Morning game in the Midwest. Stanford hadn't woke up yet. Thought we knew that by now we heard about it all season long in the media.

Unfortunately I loved watching McCaffery play all season and then suddenly I began to hate it as soon as I heard he'd be running on us in the Rose Bowl.

I've been watching some of Stanford's offense. They run a lot of 2 and 3 TE sets, with a FB and Mccaffrey in the backfield! Tough to line up in a base defense and stop that.

McCaffrey slept in and only played the fourth quarter. The game started at 9 am PST, for crying out loud.

The Hawks typically do not deviate much from their base scheme during the regular season, but it seems like they do introduce more wrinkles during bowl prep (I actually thought they did some pretty cool things in their B1G Championship game defensive game plan). I wonder if they will consider taking a page out of the 2002 Patriot's Super Bowl game plan. No matter where Marshal Faulk went on the field, they had someone assigned to hit him before he could get out of the backfield or off the line, and then they had a DB in position to cover him after the initial beating was dealt. The Rams put up some yards, but Faulk was relatively contained (130 total yards, no TDs), and their scoring output was far below their average.

Both the front and the back of the defense would really need to be on point to cover for the gaps left by devoting so much attention to one player. I think I would prefer the Hawks take this approach over letting the guy who is clearly Stanford's best offensive player beat them.

Iowa's O will be there best D. Ball control, 10 to 12 play drives keep McCaffrey off the field. Canzeri has to be healthy for Iowa to win this.

Since Iowa is the best team Stanford has faced all season, and the fact that they lost two of those games, helps me think that Iowa has a pretty good chance of containing McCaffery and the rest of the Stanford offense enough to get the win.

We stop him by running the ball effectively and CJ converting third downs. Notice I didn't include anything about how the defense will stop him...because they wont. He'll rack up touches and yards, but that wont matter if the hawks limit big plays and have long sustaining drives on offense that end in points.
