I asked Coach McCaffery tonight about perimeter D

Like I promised in the last chat, I asked Fran about Iowa's perimeter D tonight:

Q: "Coach, your on-ball pressure was a little better tonight than in games past. The perimeter D seemed to step up. Was that something you focused on?"

Coach: "We worked on that. It wasn't what it needed to be; there's no question about it. It was not what it needed to be against Purdue, they were taking us off the dribble. Guys that we knew were drivers were just going. Northwestern's a different scenario, you know. They're going to run that offense to perfection and anything short of perfection on the other end, they are going to carve you up. And we got carved up."

Thanks for asking, Justin.

If anyone has the chance at the next presser, I really would like someone to ask the questions I suggested about the home team-supplied game ball. Several times tonight I thought the Iowa players had trouble controlling it during what should be routine dribbles. Just seemed like that ball had no handles -- not that different from about three in my garage that over the years saw lots of use on a blacktop driveway.

This could also be a function of the Williams Arena floor, too: slick areas or dead spots.

I didnt see any difference from us not having any handles in any other situations.

I like how you started off the question with a little compliment. Scared after seeing him go after the refs? :)

Probably better than asking him why we suck so bad at basketball. I just hope we can beat Indy when they come to town. That may be one of our only chances for a W.

I was worried about Northwestern before we played them. The difference between the Wildcats and Gophers is that they have a number of guys who can knock down the 3ball. The Gophers primarily have only Hoffarber. We did a nice job on Blake w/ May and Gatens. Our guys didn't play help defense when guarding him. This may have resulted in a few of the dunks against us, but it allowed us to not let Hoffarber go off.

haha, no not really, he's a very nice guy. :)

I genuinely like listening to him talk after the games, as well as watch him coach on the floor. Very fun.

agreed Iowa does not have any player that can create offense. We will be out matched in every game. As long as they fight and dig themselves out of holes they will be in games. Look out in a year or two this team will be tough. I feel 2-3 players away right now along with development from players in program right now.

I think that's a result of us just not having very good ball handlers. May sometimes looks like he's about to panic.

Yep, Iowa is one recruiting class away from being a good team, or a solid string of classes together that develop.
The 2011 class looks good right now, who do we add and can it be that "one" class to make Iowa good again sooner? If we get two of these three players it will make things interesting: Stokes/Katenda/Olesani (I prefer the first two listed)
