I am such a sap

I read the articles today about Beathard taking over as the QB, and I actually started to believe things will be much better this fall. The Hawks had me at hello. I am such a freakin' sap. At least I can admit it. That's a start.

I saw him being interviewed for the first time since last year and he does seem pretty excited to take over as qb for this team. He expressed how much more confident he felt now that he knows he's the guy and isn't carrying the pressure of having to prove himself. I'll be curious to see how he handles the position he's in and how much he can grow as a leader. He was asked if he was going to change his game from what we've seen and he said that he'd like to use his legs a bit more but that he actually loves the system that's in place. I found that interesting since it's the same system that's been heavily criticized from the fans and media. Hopefully he fits Greg's system better than Jake did cause the Hawks are going to have to score more points than Kirk is accustomed to. I just don't think this defense can be expected to shut down teams like they've done in the past.

I think CJ will be better, but then I think back to the last time Iowa went into a season starting 2 new OTs. At least CJ has some mobility, cause he's gonna need it.

the over/under is 4 wins

I'll take the over for $1000, heck more if you would stand behind that. If you won't, I'll give you 20% of my winnings as a finder fee is you can find someone to give me that over/under number.

CPHawk: As for the system thing....you have to remember, if the primary receiver wasn't wide open right away, Jake tended to give up and either go with the checkdown or take off and run. CJ is more likely to go thru his progressions, so I think we'll see more passes downfield this coming season.

Plus, CJ can "throw a receiver open" whereas Jake seldom did.

There will be more interceptions...but there will also be more big plays.

Yeah, but at least CJ will give more offensive potential that Iowa will surely need than, presumably, traitor Jake.

I hope if CJ decides to carry the ball, he gets down like Tom Brady and not like Joe Kapp.

Gotta like CJ's attitude. But KF is still the puppet master:mad:

I don't disagree but KF and CJ both know he is really the only QB ready. So he can pretty much do what he wants with little to no risk of being benched. Either way that is a massive improvement from last year.

Next year's team doesn't look great on paper but their are pieces there to surprise everyone.

It's CJ's team and KF's remaining career at Iowa is pretty much on his shoulders.

This is what I'm hoping for. Having that threat of going deep helps everything. Even GD's horizontal passing attack. Establish that threat early in the season and teams will have to back off a few yards on the receivers. Really hope Canzeri can stay healthy this year too. Would like to see him catching it out of the backfield this year more, especially on 3rd down with Bullock being gone.

I'm not really sure about the interception thing, a lot of people like to say this, but I really don't think it's going to be out of control. The only times CJ has really thrown picks is when he's thrown into awful situations (The Wisconsin game into 50 MPH wind down multiple scores etc..)

Watching him last season, he wasn't any different with the safe throws that Jake was. I don't expect him to just toss picks throwing long balls either. We'll see I guess.

<<CJ is more likely to go thru his progressions>>

There is almost no empirical evidence to back this up

<<...CJ can "throw a receiver open"...>>

You can't "throw a receiver open" if he hasn't the skills to do it himself. This is akin to "drinking yourself sober". Drunk is drunk. Not open is not open.

Basically, the system--which sucks--hasn't changed.

Exactly. A QB and RB are only as good as the line that blocks for them.

Ill bet theyre going to open up the offense this year.

the over/under is 4 wins

Um, the worst season Iowa has had since 2001 is 4 wins....you are just being chicken little to put the over/under at 4, now we can argue how stale 6 or 7 wins would feel. You have no basis to think we will be sub 4 wins other than an emotional kick in the gut that was last year.
