Hyde to CB and JB to Safety? Defensive Philosphy

We need to get our best players on the field. Wouldn't this help out our defense? Bernstien would definitely help in run support. Numerous times I saw poor tackling from our safeties. They don't come up and hit. Also I think we need to send more blitzes. Not one every play but enough to get to the quarterback and get some sacks and rattle him a bit. What happened when we started blitzing Gabbert? He threw that interception to Hyde. We have a small but fast defense. We need to play to our strengths and get more aggressive or the bigger offensive lineman are going to run right over us and create perfect pockets for the QB to stand in and make throws.

I said the same thing to a buddy last night. Not sure if it will happen. I don't think we've seen enough of JB to know what he really can do, but he's looked the part in the limited time we have seen him.

Frankly, anything that gets Castillo off the field is fine with me.

And while some gripe about the scrambling TD passes, the positive is that, had the DL gotten to Jantz, they would have been "coverage" sacks.

The problem really isn't our back 7 as much as it is our front 4.

Would agree front 4 is bad and why cannot we not rotate some guys in so we are not so gassed at the end of games.

Guys were rotating in. We played at least 7 guys on the DL. Problem is they are not that good.

My hope is that Carl might actually be B1G caliber when he gets all the way back and that Alvis might perform better at end. Thought I saw flashes from Alvis last year, but he seems lost at DT.

I have thought the same thing about the Hyde / Bernstine switch. But if you play noncon like preseason as KF does, it might make more sense to leave it like this to let Hyde get more comfortable at safety if Lowery is going to really be the starter at corner.

To me, Kirksey and Bernstine look like our most explosive defenders. We need them on the field, and we need to find ways to let them make plays. We are going to have to blitz more and play more man-press coverage this year.

I also wonder how far Lowery is. He had a lot of buzz, and I'd imagine his physically more talented than Lowery. If the injury is merely a broken wrist, Lowery can still take non-conact reps in practice and be in excellent physical shape. Possibly he could return after the bye-week after the ULM game. Insert him at CB, Bernstine at Safety and we are alot more athletic in the backfield. Hyde, Prater, and hopefully Lowery can all play enough man-press to allow for a few blitz packages.

It's obvious the D-line will not get it done by themselves, so that means the Hawks will be forced to play some man coverage. Castillo is NOT good enough to play man coverage. Iowa's failure to recruit well at the cornerback position is going to bite them this year...

KF talked earlier about trying to fit the pieces together in the initial stages of the season to see what works. I think Hyde to CB and Bernstine to S are two of those pieces. Bernstine being sick hurt the Hawks yesterday.

We actually did blitz yesterday..

Yes, I was very surprised by that. I thought we looked good when we did it for the most part. I think we will have to do this more than we have in the past based on our personnel. The fact that Norm did that really makes me wonder if he knows we aren't that good up front. It shows he can make at least SOME adjustments though which is also positive for me.

Bernstein is itching to get out there and have a good season, you can just tell. We really could have used him yesterday

S-Law
S-Bernstine
CB-Hyde
CB-Prater

When Lowery gets back, possibly move Hyde back to Law's spot. I know people will say it is bad idea to start a true freshman at S, but I'm willing to live through his mistakes with Pitt and ULM for a better season altogether. Bottom line...we need some depth chart changes.

Law? That's a reach.

This will be the D Backs.

S- Bernstine and Hyde
C - Lowery and Prater

NB - Castillo (He actually does okay there.)

Wouldn't mind seeing Law in the dime.

Anybody know who was wearing # 10?
