Sorry to post on this forum but I wanted traffic and answers. I have the big arse mediacom banner ad about my usage allowance at the top of the HN webpage. Anyone else seeing this? Does anyone know how to permanently get rid of it?? I do not see any hide ad buttons.

You probably have maleware or a virus. Unless of course, media com can intrude like that.

I use the Google extension AdBlock and never see any ads.

Did you recently Google to the Mediacon site? Do you currently have Mediacon? I dropped them like a bad habit back in 2007 and have not looked back.

That's a Mediacom alert saying you are nearing your monthly data plan. They start that at 75% and a couple other times after unless you check the "don't tell me again" tab at the end of the notification. HN just happened to be the site you were on.

I dont have a data plan with mediacom. Only have Internet and the employer pays for it because the only option is CenturyLink DSL and I am not in a high speed DSL area (that would be like going back to the stone age).

Actually my employer used to pay the whole bill but then started only paying $40. My bill at the service level just above Basic was $75 (which in Des Moines and Iowa is just a big rip off). So I went from that service level to the basic level, one rung down, and I dont even notice any change in download and upload speeds, maybe a little of video streaming.

makes me think I should get a good internet speed tester site and test these two service packages. If they are way off from promised i could let the world know.

Technically you do have a data plan with Mediacom. Except it's called data caps. I think it's 350GB/month. However I don't think Mediacom warns you when you're getting close by injecting javascript into your browser. That would be a pretty ****** thing for them to do.

I don't suppose you took a screenshot. Or have seen it again? If you do see it again, please get a screenshot.

Unfortunately all Mediacom internet plans now come with data usage limits as well as varying speeds per level starting at 150gb (if you go over the limit it's like $10 per every 10 gb). I agree he d/l speeds are generally a little higher than advertised which is a plus

ya I've gotten that too- it actually covers the top of the browser and says you're nearing limit (sometimes notices of downtime due to maintenance) at the end of the notice they give 2 options to click- 1 saying ok and the other saying don't show me this again

Seriously? That would **** me off that they're injecting into my browser like that. Makes you wonder what other behind-the-scenes things they're doing with your Internet...

When I am in full site mode on my home computer I absolutely have to have my JavaScript blocker turned on. Otherwise I get a lot of advertising redirects, and extra panels. The cloud scout panels being the most annoying. I have run 4 anti virus/ anti malware programs without success. For me the only thing that worked was an addon called noscript.

Ad technology has been this way for years. Every site you visit (EVERY SITE) delivers cookies into your browser, unless you disable cookies. These cookies allow other sites to see where you have been and then deliver advertising based on your search preferences, geographical location, etc. I doubt those usage statistics the Mediacom banner ad is showing are specific to you and your consumption..they are just made to look like they are to get you to take action and click on the advertisement.
