I keep thinking there has to be more to the story.
If Hubbard only had a change of heart after a month of being on campus and there were no issues with chemistry/class/inappropriate behavior, why would Iowa let him off the hook so easily?
I recall the great lengths that Fran went to trying to persuade Fuller to stay with the program. And Fran's fairly transparent comments about Fuller after he left.
If there were no other issues, why wouldn't that be the case with Hubbard? In other words, why wouldn't we be hearing news that Fran demanded Hubbard stick around until he was back in Iowa City, and that Fran told him he wouldn't get his release until they met a couple times over the course of a week to discuss his departure?
I'd think Fran could still save face by saying he was surprised by the 180, that he did everything he could do to try to persuade Hubbard to give the school and community more of a chance, and that due to the bind of pulling a scholarship offer off the table in order to sign Hubbard, he wasn't allowing him to transfer to a Big 10 school until he gave Iowa at least another week or two to grow on him.
Fran is a fighter, and if there were nothing more to the story, I think we would have seen him fight harder to keep Hubbard and block his full release. I don't mean in a way that would harm future recruiting efforts, but we would have at least seen some of his fire.
There must have been an underlying issue - and one that won't show up on a police blotter - for Fran to give up so easily on him.
