Howe: Wisconsin Keeps Hawkeyes in Its Shadow

Great write up Rob. I think you nailed how us fans feel.

To me this season has shown the lack of depth on the o line and the defensive front 7 as the injuries in those spots are probably the difference between 6-3 and 9-0. Do we give up all the sacks with a healthy o line to michigan and PSU? Does taylor run for forever against us if Welch is out there?

Only thing I would have liked to seen the coaches do this year was go downfield more. We knew that the teams we lost to had suspect secondaries and we had talent at the receiver positions with the arm to get there. I think it would have allowed us to run more. But it seemed like against the better teams we try to dink and dunk and they load up on us in the box.

Iowa is a soft program. They like to talk a big game about being tough and gritty, but Iowa is so soft at the point of attack on both sides. Been a long time since Iowa’s had street fighters at the line of scrimmage

I don't know if I'd go with "soft" but they're certainly not physical. Huge issue in the program right now is no identity. They think they're physical but they can't run the ball. Their DL can't control the LOS against physical teams like PSU or Wisconsin. Yet Minnesota, a team not at all know for its physicality, abused PSU's front 7 yesterday. Iowa's offense looks best when they abandon trying to be physical.

Kirk is a good man and runs a clean program. As a coach he is average at best and his son is considerably below. Wis. dominates on both lines of scrimmage. That tells me Doyle is grossly overrated. Changes need to be made but will not happen. Before Kirk retires, Barta needs to go. If not, we all know who is next in line.:(

Wisconsin didn’t play that well, especially on D. It committed eight penalties, turned it over twice and the QB is meh. Iowa’s tackling was atrocious.

Looking at the box score, it’s hard to believe we were in the game.

Wisc had 213 more rushing yards, dominated time of possession and scored 7 pts off turnovers compared to our 6.

Yet if Sargeant doesn’t get hung up by the Umpire, I think Nate converts. This isn’t meant as putting blame on the U as he’s part of the field of play but I do think its what caused a missed block. It was like Sargeant came through a different hole than Stanley and just couldn’t get across to the linebackers on the other side after getting hung up.

Iowa’s offense looks best when they go no huddle and NS is just chucking it.

Iowa didn't score a single point yesterday on a play in which they didn't huddle. Their no-huddle lasted about 5 or 6 plays to end the 3rd quarter. Once the 4th quarter started they huddled again the rest of way and scored 16 points.

True. However, they are at their best when they just let NS sling it.

And that was about as tame a Camp Randall crowd as I've ever seen. Were they all in shock about the Gophers' win?

They have the weird setup where they bring the students in single file and it takes almost the whole first half to fill up that section. Once it's filled and the sun goes down, it picks up.

This is getting a lot of play on the Madison local news. If it takes them that long to get in it's obviously taking just as long to get out. Unless they have another system in place for exit strategy.

I didn't get a chance to see the actual news feature itself. But it's noticeable when you watch on TV amd definitely noticeable when you attend in person. It's also noticable that there's no general admission for the students. They are assisted by ushers and start at the bottom and fill the section row by row.

That was an excellent piece. This line is a perfect definition of Iowa football fanhood:

"Gamely climbing the mountain but failing to reach the summit tires folks out."

I don't know it to be the case but was told they usher them in single file for security purposes. The idea is to keep them from bringing in banned items.
