Howe: Understanding the Uncommon Recruitment of Oliver Martin

Man we need some football like yesterday! Fan ignorance plus trolls adds up to half of these threads turning into a bunch of whining and not even about football.

Wait . . . September will make ignorance; whining and trolls disappear from the board? I've got some bad news friend. . . . ;)

The same people complaining all the time about not offering Martin would have been complaining about the staff offering Martin in March and signing a 2* White WR out of Iowa with offers from nobody.

No I wouldn't. But besides that, your post doesn't fit in this debate. The debate is on whether or not the coaches dropped the ball on how they evaluated/handled the Oliver recruitment. Your post is better served being in a "stars don't matter" or "Kirk can't recruit" thread.

If you're just trying to say the fans that are complaining now always complain no matter what, maybe you should pay more attention to who posts what. The funny thing is, DP started this whole thing by saying they didn't get this one right. It was a simple observation. It somehow turned into people acting like we're calling for the coaches heads. It's not a huge deal. Pretty much everyone knows it. But when a 4 star in hidden in your back yard and you're aware of him but don't offer until other schools do, you dropped the ball. The only way Iowa shouldn't have been his first offer is if they were full at the position.

You've mentioned this multiple times and frankly I think it's ridiculous. Of course people would have complained about them signing a 2 star white WR from Iowa back in March. People always complain about things like that. However, you're flat out wrong saying it's the same people who are complaining now because I wouldn't have. I always trust their judgment on guys even when they are lower ranked. I'm always in those threads saying "Look at their track record of recruiting guys like this. They know what they are doing and I have no reason not to trust them". That's actually the primary reason why I have been one of the ones complaining about the fact they didn't offer Martin. They usually hit the nail on the head with these type of guys when they are underrated and this kid is in Iowa City!

Look, Kirk and his staff are doing an incredible job recruiting right now. I've said it many times. They deserve a ton of credit. However, they aren't beyond criticism. They missed a little bit by not offering Martin earlier. I think they would even acknowledge that themselves behind closed doors. I do think Rob's article is a bit of a fluff piece. They should have offered him earlier. Plain and simple. The fact people may have complained about it at that time if they had is absolutely pointless. Those same people would have happily eaten crow a few months later when that lowly 2 star recruit that Ferentz and his staff scooped up early started to blow up on the camping circuit. We would have heard "Ferentz does it again. He found the diamond in the rough before everyone else did." Unfortunately that's not the case this time.

Martin jumped over 500 spots in 247 ranking up to 67. He is the 10th ranked receiver in the class now. AJ is up to number 6 overall.
