Howe: Thoughts from Iowa's Dismal Day in East Lansing

Our scheme doesn't help, but Bower is limited athletically. I still don't understand how we haven't seen any of Mends out there, who is supposedly an athletic freak. I wish KF would lean more towards athleticism and take into account more a guys natural ability vs the safe guy who knows his duties but is limited in terms of ability and playmaking. Bower is the perfect example of the safe play by KF.

We do need to get the LB 2's some snaps, agreed there. We can't start completely over next year given what we ask of LB.

At this point don't you think you'd either have that touch or you won't? Cause it certainly hasn't gotten any better in that respect from game 1 through game 5.

that's a fair point. he just looks like he's thinking instead of playing. mistakes are not allowed at qb at iowa. i'm sure he hears: "don't under throw it and throw an interception." I think he'll get there. plus, it'd be nice to see ISM out there instead of MVB or NE. ISM has the extra gear that can run under an overthrown ball.

QUESTION: How difficult will it be for Iowa to bounce back from the loss to Penn State on the final play?

ANSWER: I'm not sure the emotional element will factor as much as the physical. For six Iowa defensive players, Penn State was a 100-snap game. Count star linebacker Josey Jewell among those six, and also include all four members of Iowa's secondary. Covering Saquon Barkley was a marathon. This probably doesn't shift personnel, but blocks are harder to shed with half of a battery life.

The offense should have been plenty rested though.

Exhausted or not, the defense played well enough to win. What's crazy is that with a healthy Manny...even with 30 rushing yards, 2 terribly timed fumbles... We may actually have pulled a very ugly win. Mostly because I think MSU is a very average fb team.

I'm angry, still.

Looking at the game through rose-colored glasses.....

A comment or two or more that might ease the pain.....

The Spartans scored one field goal the final three quarters at home.....

The ball that slipped from Stanley's hand seemed, from the replay I watched, to be going to a wide open Hawkeye in the end zone. At least that is how it appeared from a video clip. Might be wrong on that but it seemed to show a Hawkeye receiver standing just over the goal line with no one in front of him, simply awaiting the ball. Score could have been 17-14 at that point with 9:44 left in the third quarter.....

At the 50 second mark, the Hawkeye receiver seems to be open with a Spartan defender behind him. Quite possibility a TD without slippery ballitis.....

Nonetheless, it was a very disappointing and frustrating game to watch......

Hopeful a strong victory over Illinois will right the ship.....

It doesn't get any easier after the bye week.....

Tough one to leave behind. I comfort myself thinking about the improvement from the Penn State debacle last season to the following Michigan game at Kinnick.....

We played two of our tougher games to start the conference. It’s a young team making correctable mistakes. I should have mentioned punting. That was killer.

The next two weeks will be critical, IMO. These guys need to iron things out. Illinois is like a bye week and then there is a bye week.

It can a still be a good season.

Btw, I made it home to Iowa City. That drive sucks.

Sorry, but MSU is not one of our tougher games. They are maybe an average team at best. We are not a good football team, period. The offense is simply beyond pathetic, and there really is no reason to be optimistic about it going forward. We have exactly one playmaker. Take him away, and we are done. Stanley will not beat anyone throwing the football, and our receiving group is probably one of the worst in all of college football. Where will the points come from? We're 2 games into the conference and average 15 points a game with tougher defenses on the schedule still.

Is Illinois like a bye week though? If we play like the first 4 weeks, should be. My confidence hasn't been shaken like this in a very long time.

On a lighter note, would you say that drive sucks worse than our first 3-4 drives of the last couple games? I kid, I kid...

You don’t have to be sorry. We just disagree.

I’d say they’re comparable. ;)

Illinois is BAD.

-------It can a still be a good season.

Seriously Rob, can you please define a good season, Jon thinks that 7-5 is good given our talent....that excuse only works if you are coming off a season where you did something. But this is Iowa, where "doing something" is going to any Bowl and 7-5 is awarded.

And really this game was very close to being a 20-17 Iowa win. Stanley fumble should have been a TD play. Smith has got to hang on to the ball. It wasn't a crushing hit he took or like AW's last week when it was helmet right on the ball. Just a mistake. He hangs on and at least a FG is likely.

And of course the narrative here would be incredibly different. Still concerns about run game and OL, Stanley overthrows, play calling, but winning cures all, even ugly wins on the road in the B1G are good.

It's just a fine line for Iowa between winning and losing. Always has been. Right now they're on the wrong side of that line. Turnovers are killing Iowa and for the large part they are correctable.

Facts are facts. Iowa is 3-2(0-2). Not good spot. But they're literally inches and 2 uncharacteristic turnovers from being 5-0(2-0) and probably ranked somewhere in the top 15 and we're all sky high.

I can’t decide for anyone else what he or she thinks is a good season.

I also can’t decide for what is a good season until it’s over. We’re not even halfway through this one.

That game in Piscataway last year was supposed to be a bye too. That game in Minneapolis last year was supposed to be fairly easy too...how'd that feel? This OLine is worse than the one last year.

All true. And if we hadn't just put up only 30 yards rushing...i probably wouldn't be quite so down...

Agree we need to find a way to generate pressure on opposing qb's. Unfortunately from my vantage point is seems most of the time we do call for a blitz it gets picked up and leads to a big play for the opposition.

By bye week I mean I don’t see Iowa losIng. Illinois is awful.

i agree with the other poster. This was a young, inexperienced, VERY average MSU football team and Kirk and his staff, once again, made them out to be a juggernaut they just couldn't figure out. That is another problem within a problem. Not only did Iowa lose, but Dantonio has surpassed Kirk in heights of achievement with the same approach and even did, just this year, with the equivalent of losing half an entire recruiting class due to scandal during the offseason. What an embarrassment for Iowa. And you'll see just how bad MSU is next week when Harbaugh pours out a can of a$$ whooping all over Dantonio. I'll take UM by 2+ touchdowns over MSU. MSU won't move the ball across the street against UM. I fully recognize that Iowa likely won't win every game, but what pisses off the fanbase more than anything is watching other developmental programs in our own conference (MSU and UW) advance their brand, seize big opportunities, win big bowls, etc yet we have done absolutely nothing comparatively in the last decade. Unacceptable.
