Howe: Opportunity Awaits Brian Ferentz, Nate Stanley at Outback Bowl

Hawkeye offensive coordinator, quarterback can answer critics against nation's top defense:

Rob, my boy, I totally love ya. But I live in Florida. I have seen it all, Outback-wise. The only thing left for Hawk fans, in terms of this game, would be a comeback victory, given our two Tampa wins have been blow-outs.

This team is not a "iconic-come-from-behind-victory-in-the-Outback-Bowl" kind of team. But, should it happen, I will be thrilled beyond thrilled.

I sure hope I'm wrong, but I don't see our offense scoring any more than 20 points. I hope our defense is ready to hold Miss State to 14 or less.

I think the entire young offensive coaching staff has a good opportunity as well as every player. Against possibly the best defense in the nation.
I think our entire defense has an opportunity against "big brother".

They need to buy Stanley some extra time to get the ball off.
Stanley needs the clock in his head to be accurate. Get the ball out. A way to counter a pressure D is to get the ball out quick.
Our pass protection has been very good all year. We rank 6th in the country in sack% allowed.

That being said MSU is the best pass rush we’ve faced all year and NS has issues with presence in the pocket.

I do think this is actually a big momentum game for this program. If Iowa can win and do it while looking strong, I think it validates that they were a pretty good team this year who happened to lose a handful of games.

That momentum could carryover into next year. We have some losses, but we return a lot of talent and experience. The decisions of the few potential early entrants will be interesting to follow.

And if the 2019 team is to be great then it will mean first taking a 5th in a row from ISU in Ames. That will be a great indicator as to what we have in 2019.

The best opportunity awaiting Brian Ferentz is a free bloomin onion. In all seriousness, a win here would be a great springboard into next year. I have a feeling this won't be another "hawkslayer bowl". I think Brandon Smith could show up big--with Fant gone and him playing his home state.

We need another TE to show some pass-catching/playmaking ability in this game, because both are gone at the start of next season. We need a rb to get over 100 yards.

On D, we need to see some production from linebackers and safties.

We don't have to win, just show those things and I'm optimistic about next year. If we win and don't show those things; I'll be pessimistic about next year. If we win and show those things I'll be through the roof about next year.

If we can score 20 pts, we win. I don't see our defense giving up 3 tds or more to the MSU offense.

Part of the equation is Iowa scoring points. But, as I wrote, a big part is just not flat out being awful on offense. Three-and-outs, negative plays, turnovers, all factor in. Losing the field position game will probably lose this game.

Mississippi State scored an average of 4 points per game in their four losses this season.

Iowa allowed the fewest points scored in the Big Ten this season.

Iowa is +7, looks like the lock of the year to take Iowa.

Yes, opportunity for Brian and Stanley.

What could go wrong?

MSU lost AT No. 1 Alabama, AT No. 11 LSU, AT No. 14 Kentucky and to No. 10 Florida.

Yeah, this shouldn't be much of a challenge for the Hawkeyes.
... and the year before their 4 losses were to #2 Alabama (by 7), #11 Georgia, #13 Auburn, and their arch rival Ol Miss by just 3. They will be a tough out.
