Howe: Nobody Outside Iowa Locker Room Saw This Beatdown Coming

Rob, if you saw my posts, I certainly thought Iowa was going to do well. OSU didn't have much of a road resume. Going into the game some of the OSU fans were saying they were concerned about Barrett right, Barrett left and play action pass as their plays. Iowa historically has done well against such QBs.

I think they've had an upgrade in talent speed.

My criticisms were specifically about play calling and coaching this year. And they did much better of wrapping up tackles unlike earlier in the year.

I didn't see KF opening things up. Glad he didn't play for a chance at a 4th quarter win.

The bigger question is which Iowa game plan will we see going forward.

Somewhere along the Meyer said something about being baited.

I honestly didn't see your posts. Crazy time of year for me with football-basketball overlap.

You're not telling me you called for a 55-24 beatdown, though, right? I think it's pretty safe to say that nobody saw complete domination coming. :)

Absolutely not that. This reminded me of when HF and IL used to thump on each other. Im thrilled but at the same time a bit...dont know how to describe it.

Dont oft go to other fo forums but its nice to see OSU fans not blaming refs. A few question the fake fg legals but were set straight.

If I were OSU I would not want to play Iowa at Kinnick on Sat. Wisky will have their hands full. If KF lets Wadley rip in the open and lets Stanley take risks....

I went on OSU site and OSU fans:

1) were screaming f*bombs about refs until the blowout was beyond doubt. Hard to continue to blame refs for 31 point differential.

2) were complaining about bad recruiting at LB. no depth or talent.

3) about Urban’s thick headed stubbornness.

4) about OSU playing down to the level of the competition.

5) about not getting up for games.

Seems like I’ve heard all of these before from somewhere and maybe even jotted a couple of them down a few times.

I saw good news though. The Iowa Hater/Fan is a much lesser, a more timid, and a contented Hater/Fan than OSU Hater/Fan.

Thanks for making this site less unbearable than that site.

And to be fair to Hawkeye fans, I doubt if anyone IN the locker room saw this beat down coming.

It reminded me most if the feeling I had at the Big House in '02. That was kind of KF's breakthrough moment. The Hawkeyes manhandled Michigan that day and I don't think many people saw that coming. I think yesterday was more impressive, though.

or any domination by iowa coming. who honestly thought iowa would win?

it was more impressive because of the way we've been manhandled by OSU for the past 55 years; when we've played them. i mean, yesterday was a "why the hell did you even get off the bus" beat down over a team that thought they were headed for the playoff. we learned them something

Realizing that Meyer looked dazed or confused after the game tells me they were overlooking IA.

The two players we spoke with in the postgame pretty much said that was the case. They said they didn't practice well this week.

That’s what the OSU center inferred in the post-game presser.

I thought I heard or read, however, a couple of OSU journalists say that Meyer and OSU coaches were put off when they were asked if OSU over-looked Iowa.

Meyer said he didn’t see anything in practice that would indicate a letdown.

I thought I remember hearing during the game there was a discussion in the production meetings for the broadcast that if Meyer or any of the coaches got any whiff of OSU looking past Iowa, Meyer was going to go nuclear. Does anybody else remember hearing that? Might just be coach-speak or the players faked it well enough to appease the coaches...last two posts suggest it's entirely possible some of the players may have been going through the motions this week.

Totally understandable. Look at what happened to BOTH the Hawks and MSU after the 2015 B1G CG. We beat each other to a pulp. MSU had nothing for Alabama, and the Hawks, in spite of saying "The Granddaddy" wasn't a "consolation" prize, were not at all excited for the actual game.

In OSUs case, they left it all on the field last week, and let's be blunt, the Hawks had shown nothing on film to indicate being a "dangerous" or "explosive" team.

Kudos to PP and BF, along with the rest of the staff. As Tom Hagen told Michael Corleone, "Roth played this one beautifully". The Hawks did so, too.

OSU center Billy Price was one of the players who spoke. He said he felt they didn't practice well enough.

I think the players have a better sense of that than do the coaches. IMO, the coaches don't want to admit it because it's an indictment of them when they don't have their team ready to go.

I can't wait for next year when the game is in Columbus. You can bet your house that they will have this game circled on their calendar. Hopefully Iowa will be able to step up to the challenge. I would like nothing more than for Iowa to become OSU's thorn in their ass like Northwestern is for us. Beating teams like Ohio State is how you earn respect in the college football world.

Because of the wacky B1G scheduling, Iowa doesn't play in Columbus until '20. That's the next time the Hawkeyes face OSU.

Oh ok, my bad....I thought they did a home and away with opponents from the other division and then switched.

True.
And it could be a player using poor prep week as an excuse for getting out-played. They don’t want to admit that. Better to admit lack of focus.

This game was 17-17 after 27 minutes of football. They punched Iowa back every time Iowa scored. I find it hard to believe they were looking past Iowa.
