Howe: Ken O'Keefe has Developed Skin Tougher than Leather

A target of criticism throughout his first run at Iowa, assistant coach Ken O'Keefe returned to the Hawkeyes this offseason. Time seemed to heal old wounds:

I guess there were people who were hopeful when KOK left and Davis arrived. But if any Iowa fan knew a halfway informed Longhorn fan, they had to know we were in for a lot of passes that were near the line of scrimmage and probably a lot of frustration from the fans. That is what they had been experiencing at Texas once they stopped getting Heisman-caliber talent at QB.

The ironic thing is that two of the three starting QBs that GD coached @ Iowa are now in the NFL. KOK's total was one out of seven if my counting is correct. Never had a problem w/ KOK's plays, just with the lack of in game adjustments based on what was happening on the field. BF has shown a willingness to adapt to in game conditions on the line and I hope that willingness carries over to the offense as a whole. The current coaching lineup, for the most part, seems to fit their roles. If BF, KOK, Polasek and Copeland gel then great things are ahead for the Hawks.

It has to be a bit more relaxing the 2nd time around and in addition coming in behind the previous replacement that wasn't that successful. For some reason, there is a comfort level feeling with O'keefe on the staff. I think this will turn out well and they will go back to what worked well before.

It was rediculous trying to marry both KF and Davis's style of offense together. They tried to incorporate each and combine them together but the were too different and it showed. Not sure how they had so much success in 2015, actually, even with the easier schedule.

KOK was definetly better than Davis. I'm still not sure anybody would welcome him back with open arms to be the OC again but having him back as QB coach makes perfect sense.

Having the excitement of a young and new OC provides hope but I love that Brian is surrounded by experience with both KOK and the O-Line coach having play calling experience.

At least right now, it seems like a good mix of experience and hopefully some fresh ideas as well.

This is not unique to Iowa. OC's are unpopular almost everywhere.

Chuck Long was giving an interview and he stated for his entire 6 years at Oklahoma (as OC) they lost 2 home games. When they lost the first one he woke up the next morning with someone having put For Sale signs up in the yard at his house.

Yes, in game adjustments and NOT getting the play in on time.

Ken is coming into a role he was born for...coaching QB's and mentoring a new O coordinator, and working for KF, who knows him well and there is great confidence and respect between the two. I just hope we can hold on to him for five years, at least.
