Howe: Hawkeyes Working with Unusual Running Back Dynamic

Wasn't there supposed to be a 3rd back in '16, though? Was that Mitchell?

Yeah, people thought we was going to have a big role because he was a pretty good 3rd down back in '15. But in 2016, Wadley got so good at receiving (and good enough at blocking) that it would have been crazy to take him off the field on 3rd downs. So DMJ was kind of out of a job.

In 2015, each of Canzieri, Daniels Jr., and Wadley missed multiple games (or were substantially less than 100%) with injuries.

In 2014, Weisman spent much of the season as the last man standing after Canzieri, Bullock, and Daniels Jr. all got banged up. RS freshman Wadley was healthy, but after something like 3 fumbles in 30 touches, he fell out of the rotation.

I would agree with this but also add that to me this year’s Sargent looks better than last year. He’s running hard and looks to have a little bit more burst.

I agree with that. Early in the year last year I thought Young looked better than Sargent but Sargent certainly leaped Young last year and seems to be more improved as well.

Both Mekhi and Toren passed the 1000 yard career rushing mark in the first half. ESPN made no mention of it that I heard.
