Howe: Hawkeyes Will Always Wonder About What Might Have Been in ’18

One thing we were talking about last night on the long ride home from WL was that this program shouldn’t be starting two true freshmen at CB at this point. Purdue preyed on that, not just on the long passes, but in isolating them on the edge and make them tackle in space.

Hankins did get hurt but I sensed that he lost his starting job anyway even before the house party.

Rugamba was beat out by Hankins and Ojemudia. Ojemudia hasn’t played well. Attrition and questionable recruiting at the position has hurt.

Iowa also was outcoached yesterday. The staff better be ready for Fitz and crew.
This is probably KF's poorest staff since he was hired. Too many weak links, IMO.

Is that any more surprising than 2 freshman tackles last year?

I know there were injuries, and Jackson wasn't a true frosh, but still- OL is supposed to be KF and BF's biggest strength.

You are what your record says you are. Iowa's just not that good, from the top to the bottom.

No they are not that good from top to bottom. This includes a certain punter who hit that astounding 31 yard gem that pinned Purdue back at midfield before their final drive.

It's been said by many people over several years. If you're an Iowa fan, an 8-4 regular season record is going to have to be your norm. Otherwise, you'll be frustrated most of the time.

As an Iowa fan who lives out of state, I luckily have been gone long enough I have other options to root for now. And the teams I'm talking about never want anything less than perfect. They rarely achieve it, but they strive for it.

I think that’s a bit different because it was directly related to the injury of two 5th-year seniors. But, yes, there have been some recruiting misses on the OL that resulted in playing freshmen tackles last year.

I do applaud the coaches for a willingness to play whoever rises to the top, as, too often in the past, the coaches seemed to stubbornly play upperclassmen regardless of ability.

That said, one of the biggest issues with this program for the last several years has always been "a glaring weak link" amongst the starters. It seems like every season, we have a position or two where we are forced to play players that are either not ready or not P5 material. Sadly, it frequently seems to happen at positions we should be able to stock adequately, such as the offensive line. Why we struggle to recruit that group year after year is both perplexing and vexing.

As for the DBs, I actually think the corners played reasonably well yesterday. Obviously, there were a few big plays, but they were in good position. Moss just needs to turn and locate, which will come with time.

I actually was more disappointed in the safeties. Gervase and Stone both got sucked in at times, and both took horrible angles on some plays. They're too experienced for that to happen, especially Gervase.

and like in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018....see the pattern here under this average coaching staff?

Yep, I'd exclude 15, but ya I agree with your point. We're all hoping that the hawks will move the mean, break out and push to 9-10 win range. That MAY still happen but I'm much less confident about it.

The offense is more interesting with Brian, but I don't think he's all that confident in what he's doing just yet.

If Scott Frost improves, Kirk moves to the bottom half of Big 10 coaches. I'm not holding my breath for this to happen.

If we did schoolyard pick 'em when it comes to the B1G West coaches,
Scott Frost, Jeff Brohm, Pat Fitzgerald and Paul Cryst would already be scooped up, before Kirk.

Yeah, we finish above Lovie Smith and PJ Fleck.
Back the Brinks truck up, yet again.

The offense may be more "interesting" with Brian, but it's proving one thing: execution matters.

Yesterday wasn't helped by the "resurgence" of LAST season's punting game.
