Howe: Hawkeyes Will Always Wonder About What Might Have Been in ’18

Good teams can lose 1 close game a year, mediocre teams lose 3, and that’s what Iowa is. Inconsistent and lacking a true offensive identity.

Against Wisconsin it was the special teams. Against PSU it was the offense. Today it was the defense. That's all three units. That tells me that all are inconsistent. That doesn't sound like a championship level team to me.

I get that you don't always win the close ones, but Iowa is notoriously BAD in close games. Honestly the basketball program is the same way but I digress. That's what drives me nuts. Sooooooooo many missed opportunities over the years to do bigger and better things, and most have been squandered.

If you are not good enough to win games by 2 or more scores, then you leave yourself vulnerable to playing in a lot of close games that could go either way.

Even if Iowa gets enough breaks to win those games, it does not mean you are championship caliber. It just means you are lucky.

Kirk has gotten a lot better at game day coaching as far as I'm concerned. But one area he needs to still improve on is understanding the value (or lack of value) of killing clock late in games. He puts too much emphasis on trying to keep the clock moving late and too little emphasis on giving the team a good chance to make first downs. That kills our offense a lot in close games. Today it probably didn't matter because of the holding calls. But running on 2nd and 24 was a horrible decision. It all but eliminated the chance of a first down, all in the attempt to drain 30 seconds off a clock that wasn't even a factor yet. The defense would have all but given up an 8 yard pass on 2nd down there.

Can we please get a WR that can catch a clutch ball and a QB that can through a deep ball on target. That's all I ask.

The results indicate one constant over 20 years of football...Kirk is an unachiever and his leadership produces similar teams, which can't get it done when opportunity is knocking. Several dozen eggs spanning hundreds of players.

Exactly. If they were good enough to win these games, they would’ve. Good teams do not do the shit this team and staff does. There’s not one thing solid about this team
What’s solid with this team is what’s sitting in their shorts each time they have a lead near the end of close games.

The sad thing is that it's quite possible that we lose at least two more games. NW is peaking, Nebby is coming on and Illinois blasted Minnesota.

We aren't a bad team necessarily, but, I think we have a bad mindset, for lack of a better word. I think a lot of that goes back to recruiting. This program is so focused on finding the blue-collar lunchpail choir boy types, that we seem to forget the importance of moxie, grit, savviness, etc., and, of course, simple athleticism.

Too many vacant blank stares on the field. Not enough, "I'm going to sink a dagger into you and make you feel completely dejected." looks.

Quick: Who would you say are the leaders on this team? Exactly. This is part of the problem. I think this team lacks "Senior" leadership. There's just something missing.

One thing we were talking about last night on the long ride home from WL was that this program shouldn’t be starting two true freshmen at CB at this point. Purdue preyed on that, not just on the long passes, but in isolating them on the edge and make them tackle in space.

Hankins did get hurt but I sensed that he lost his starting job anyway even before the house party.

Rugamba was beat out by Hankins and Ojemudia. Ojemudia hasn’t played well. Attrition and questionable recruiting at the position has hurt.

Iowa also was outcoached yesterday. The staff better be ready for Fitz and crew.
