Howe: Hawkeyes Stuck in Neutral with Timing Running Out

I'm trying to be optimistic that things will click with this team. I want to believe it will eliminate the mistakes and make plays. I'm struggling to envision it happening with what we've seen to date.

The coaches need to do better, too. Kicking a FG down eight with 5:28 to play with your defense gassed was more than a curious decision.

I couldn't agree more. I was shocked that they were trying to kick a field goal at that point. If you can't get a TD there why would any competent coach think they could score on a long drive?

I actually agree with this. This feels worse than 2012, given the expectations and what we had coming back. The offense is getting worse, and I personally do not believe is all due to lack of talent.

It would certainly help to have some wide outs that run faster than a 4.7. Wisconsin's defensive backs were dancing to the PA music between plays. They had no concerns at all about Iowa's receivers. The scheme is a killer too. Defenses only have to read two formations when playing Iowa.

With each passing week, I'm thinking more and more that this is Greg Davis' last year.

How many frickin years has this been said? The guy has been lukewarm dog shit since the day he arrived, yet he's still here pilfering a cool million a year from the university. That alone is enough to send KF ass packing. The guy is letting the program swirl further down the shitter bc of blind loyalty to coaches/players when he should be loyal to doing what is best for the football program.. Look how many piss poor seasons we've had under KF, and he's fired what...1 coach in 17 years? He didn't even actively search for KOK replacement. Just went and hired Davis, who NO other team in the country wanted.

Rob you hinted last week the coaches were toying with the idea of using King on offense. Was that a guess, or were they giving you signs?

Nothing concrete just kind of get that vibe. I think he was on the clock last season.

That clock has to have sped up this season. We cannot be the only ones to see the Davis experiment has been awful. I mean, there just has to be feelers out. Kirk's next OC hire will his last, one way or another.

I think they've been considering it. I'm hoping they move forward with it during the bye week.

I'm all for it. That said, and I may very well be way off base, I just don't believe we have as much of a talent problem as a playcalling-scheme-pass route problem. That is not to say more speed and talent won't help, just that there's an awful lot of evidence that we have an OC that is incapable of using it at Iowa.

An example would be Tevaun Smith, who in my opinion was ridiculously underused. NFL talent at WR.

Everywhere I turn I have to listen to some BS about having games left to play. Dolphin makes me want to puke on the post game show with his 'hey folks we have 4 more to play' bull crap as if this coach is really going to get serious with this program now that the season is done.

IT'S OVER!
As I've said before now that he has a HUGE lifetime contract KF doesn't need to win a game he doesn't need to be able to count to 8. He just needs to kick useless FGs and not say anything in interviews and he collects Millions.

I agree with you there. Though we do not have the most talented offense, it should be better then what we see results wise on the field. Our play calling is atrocious. Boring. Predictive. We need better play calling. Better routes run. mix things up.

This strictly falls on Greg Davis. as this has been a trend of his over the last few years.

If you want to take it KF then the buck should stop there, ultimately.

Could not agree more with that. Last year that kept crossing my mind. The guy had talent and speed. Yet we hardly used the guy. Could have really opened things up much more on the field. Could have had even better results from Canzeri last year with Smith being a recognized and proven weapon last year.

If it's true that the WR's (with the exception of a few over the years) only learn one position, I think that's a huge mistake that would lend itself to some of the scheme issues we've been having. If you have 2 dynamite receivers and one goes down, generally speaking, you don't see the injured players backup becoming the focal point of the passing game. Maybe they like McCarron's skill set to take over for MVB and wouldn't consider Scheel or Smith in that spot or there just isn't a big enough chasm between McCarron and the other WR's to give them a reason to move people around.

I also agree with the above posters that Tevaun Smith was criminally underused. He was one of the most talented wind sprinters in the country last year...he seemed to be the type of guy who could make plays for the QB if you put it up for him.

This headline came to mind as I saw the Big Ten and National recruiting rankings....and how Iowa placed relative to others...actually sliding.

Lets not be too surprised with 7.5 wins for the foreseeable future.
