Howe: Hawkeyes Get Away from Winning Formula in Loss at Maryland

This has nothing to do with Rob's article...just an observation. Pass the ball to a 3 point shooter and he makes the shot it's an assist. If he misses...no assist. So if we make at least 10 threes as we have the last few games we have at least 5 more assists...without doing anything different than what we were doing. I'm not saying 14+ assists to 11 turnovers is great but it's not nearly as bad as 9 to 11.

Live by the 3, die by the 3. Last night the Hawks died by it. Not saying Iowa played that well or that Maryland didn't have something to do with that either... But last night's game is exactly why I would like to see Iowa establish a little more consistent post scoring presence before being ready to classify this team as "elite". If you can score in the paint, you can always go to that. Otherwise, what do you do when the outside shots aren't falling?

Uthoff posted his man up at least 3 times (on different possessions) in the 2nd half...had him totally sealed. And we didn't get the ball to him. I have no doubt this will be addressed when looking at game film.

To me the reach in this write up was taking a shot at them for playing as individuals, I didn't see that at all. Fact is Iowa missed shots tonight that they haven't been missing. Maryland isn't chopped liver, that's a good damn Top 10 team that Iowa lost to by 6 on the road.

Another thing to think about is when a team is playing really good defense like Maryland was, you're probably better off shooting a quick open shot than you are hoping for a better shot later. Odds are you won't get a better shot and might turn it over.

There were 2 shots in a row I didn't like. One was Uhl from the baseline. I can't remember the other right now but it annoyed me because they were back to back possessions late in the game. Maybe that sequence stuck out to Rob too and that's what he was remembering when he wrote the article.

Actually we ran something a little different at the end of the 1st half. Wasn't Gessel isolation. Still didn't work.

Gessel is still a very important piece on this team. He played poorly last night but its just 1 game. He still may be a little injured. We don't know. On to Northwestern.

I saw somewhere else that someone was ripping on Gesell for the end of the half. He passed the ball to Clemmons with about 10 seconds left Do people even watch the game?

Yeah, I can't recall all the specifics, but some of this seemed to occur when Iowa had some momentum, or was at least getting stops, and had a chance to get a lead and assert a little control.. Then some bad shots kind of snuffed that out. The one from Uhl you mentioned, and there were some others that I thought were just too quick & contested.

Sometimes not playing in rhythm as a team is a function of guys trying to do too much. As I've written a lot this season, these guys are unselfish. And I think I credited Maryland for its part in getting us off our game twice in the first quarter of the column.

I don't think they played non cohesively either as a whole. They missed open shots and tried to use their individual skills at times to create for others. There were times, and it seemed like whenever we got tied or took a lead when we did rush a shot or make a bad play. They just wouldn't get on a roll once it was close and a lot of that was self inflicted.

Our first 5 or 6 baskets were all from attacking the hoop.

And we needed to do more of that.....Coach Turgeon about had a coronary b/c we pushed the ball, and got layups, then for some reason we got away from it (and M'land started to play tougher defense)....
